Beloved Opening Day Attractions at Universal Orlando Are Set for a Big Closure in 2026, Rumors Suggest

Picture this: you’ve planned your dream Universal Orlando trip, only to discover your favorite ride isn’t operating—not for a few hours, not for a day, but for months. For many theme park fans, that’s the nightmare scenario rumors are pointing toward as speculation swirls about upcoming refurbishments.

It wouldn’t be the first time Universal closed a headliner for an extended upgrade. Fans still remember when Revenge of the Mummy went dark for more than half a year. If history repeats, two of the most nostalgic attractions at the resort could be next in line.

So, what’s the buzz, how reliable is it, and what do guests need to know before planning a visit?

The Latest: Rumors of Extended Closures Ahead

A post on the Inside Universal forums by user Jwhee sparked discussion after suggesting both Jurassic Park River Adventure and E.T. Adventure may be “lined up” for Mummy-style refurbishments in 2026.

“This [Jurassic Park River Adventure] and ET are lined up for major Mummy-style refurbs. Not sure which one is coming first, though. I’ve heard our new [thing] for 2026 might be a stage show, but not totally confident in it.”

The comparison to Revenge of the Mummy’s refurbishment caught attention since that attraction was closed for seven months while receiving major technical and show upgrades. If similar work is planned for Jurassic Park or E.T., fans could be looking at lengthy closures.

Currently, the only confirmed update is that Jurassic Park River Adventure will shut down in January 2025 for scheduled refurbishment. No official plans have been shared regarding E.T. Adventure.

How to Ride Before the Clock Runs Out

If these rumors hold weight, fans won’t want to miss out on these attractions before they potentially go offline. A few tips:

  • Jurassic Park River Adventure: Early mornings are your best shot at minimal wait times. Afternoon rides are wetter but usually quicker. Ponchos or water-friendly shoes are a must.

  • E.T. Adventure: A classic that still personalizes each ride. For shorter waits, check if the single rider option is open, and make sure your name is clearly given to the attendant—it pays off in the finale.

  • Stay updated: The Universal Orlando app is your lifeline for live wait times and closure updates.

Secrets and Lesser-Known Perks

  • Jurassic Park River Adventure: Even if you skip the ride, the viewing area near the drop is perfect for dramatic photos and splash-zone reactions.

  • E.T. Adventure: Hardcore fans sometimes ask about the original preshow film featuring Steven Spielberg—it’s a rare treat if available.

  • Crowd hacks: Lines for both rides drop significantly during parades, nighttime spectaculars, or rain showers.

Why Fans Care So Much

These two attractions hold a special place in Universal’s story. E.T. Adventure remains the last opening-day ride at Universal Studios Florida, a living piece of 1990s nostalgia. Meanwhile, Jurassic Park River Adventure delivers the kind of practical effects-driven thrills that defined Universal’s Islands of Adventure when it opened.

For many guests, they’re not just rides—they’re time machines to the golden age of theme parks. Refurbishments could breathe new life into them with updated animatronics, effects, and reliability. But the emotional cost of long-term closures is real for fans who treat these rides as must-do traditions.

Final Thoughts

As of now, only Jurassic Park River Adventure’s January 2025 closure is confirmed. The rest remains speculation. But if Universal does move forward with “Mummy-style” refurbishments, it could mark a new era for these attractions—one that balances preservation with modernization.

Until official announcements drop, fans should plan visits wisely, experience the rides while they’re open, and stay tuned for updates.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
