Universal Orlando Resort built an entire vacation strategy around The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Guests hop between parks, ride signature attractions, and board the Hogwarts Express as part of what feels like one giant connected experience. But lately, one major piece of that formula has struggled to stay reliable.
Over the last year, one attraction has experienced repeated maintenance closures, delayed openings, and technical downtime, disrupting park days for guests trying to move between Universal’s parks. While ride closures happen everywhere, the frequency surrounding this attraction has started standing out more and more throughout 2026.
Harry Potter Continues To Dominate Universal Orlando
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has grown into the centerpiece of Universal Orlando Resort. What started as one themed land has now expanded across multiple parks, giving guests several different Harry Potter environments to explore.
At Islands of Adventure, guests walk directly into Hogsmeade Village. The snowy rooftops, Hogwarts Castle, and themed storefronts create one of the most immersive lands in the resort. This side also includes Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which still rank among the most popular rides in Florida.
Over at Universal Studios Florida, Diagon Alley delivers a completely different atmosphere. Guests enter through the hidden brick wall before finding shops like Ollivanders and Knockturn Alley alongside Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts.
Universal expanded the franchise even further with Epic Universe, which now features a new area inspired by the Ministry of Magic. Together, the lands make Harry Potter one of the largest franchises in any theme park resort.

The Train Became Part of the Experience
For many guests, the Hogwarts Express is not simply transportation between parks. Universal designed it as an attraction in its own right.
The train links Hogsmeade Station at Islands of Adventure with King’s Cross Station at Universal Studios Florida. Inside the train cars, guests watch scenes unfold outside the windows as they travel between parks.
The experience varies depending on the direction guests travel, so many visitors ride it multiple times during a vacation. Walking through King’s Cross and passing through the Platform 9¾ illusion also remains one of the most memorable parts of the attraction.
That level of immersion helped make the train one of Universal Orlando Resort’s signature experiences. Unfortunately, it has also become one of the resort’s more inconsistent attractions operationally.

Frequent Downtime Has Started Creating Problems
The Hogwarts Express has been unavailable for a surprisingly long time over the last year.
The attraction closed for maintenance in May, September, and December before another refurbishment arrived in February 2026. Those planned closures have already taken the attraction out of service for significant periods.
But scheduled maintenance has not been the only issue.
The attraction has also experienced repeated delays and unexpected downtime during normal park hours. Guests have reported arriving at stations during the day only to find train operations temporarily suspended.
That can become frustrating quickly, especially for guests who use park-to-park tickets specifically to ride the Hogwarts Express. Since many visitors use the train as their main method of transportation between parks, downtime can throw off carefully planned itineraries.

Guests May Want a Backup Plan
Universal Orlando has not officially announced another refurbishment for Hogwarts Express yet. Still, the attraction’s recent history suggests additional downtime could happen again later in 2026.
Three separate maintenance periods in one year is a notable number for any attraction, especially one designed to transport guests between parks continuously. If operational problems continue, Universal may eventually decide a longer closure is necessary to address recurring technical issues.
That does not mean guests should skip the attraction entirely. Instead, it simply means flexibility may become important when planning a day at the resort.
Fortunately, guests can still walk between Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida through CityWalk if train service goes down.
And even during Hogwarts Express interruptions, the Wizarding World still offers several major attractions worth prioritizing. Escape From Gringotts, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey all continue drawing large crowds.

Trouble Brewing at Platform 9¾
Universal Orlando Resort created The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to feel seamless across its parks, and the Hogwarts Express plays a major role in connecting everything. That is exactly why the attraction’s recent operational struggles have become harder for guests to ignore.
Between maintenance closures, delayed openings, and technical interruptions, the attraction has faced a rough stretch over the past year. Until those issues become less frequent, guests visiting throughout 2026 may want to keep alternative plans ready when traveling between parks.
