Universal Orlando ‘Harry Potter’ Attraction Closing in 2027: What Guests Need to Know

A trip through Hogwarts rarely feels like an ordinary theme-park ride. Guests move past talking portraits, step inside Dumbledore’s office, visit the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, and eventually board an enchanted bench for a flight through the Wizarding World.

For 12 days in early 2027, however, that journey will be unavailable.

Universal Orlando Resort has scheduled Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey for a temporary closure from February 8 through February 19, 2027. The dates appear on Universal’s official park-hours and temporary-closures calendar, giving guests with February vacations an unusually early warning that one of Islands of Adventure’s defining attractions will not be operating.

The listing is confirmed, but its purpose is less certain. Universal categorizes the interruption as a “Temporary Closure.” It has not identified the work being performed, announced changes to the experience, or formally described the closure as a refurbishment.

That distinction matters. Maintenance would be a reasonable possibility for a technologically complex attraction, but Universal has not provided enough information to promise upgrades—or even visible differences—when the ride returns.

Universal Orlando Sets a 12-Day Harry Potter Closure

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey will be unavailable on 12 calendar dates if Universal’s schedule remains unchanged. February 19 is included in the published closure window.

February 20 is the first date outside that window, but Universal has not separately announced it as a guaranteed reopening date. Its calendar warns that closure dates are subject to change, meaning visitors arriving immediately afterward should continue checking the official schedule and Universal Orlando app.

The interruption affects Forbidden Journey rather than the entire Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade. Universal has not listed Hogsmeade, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, Flight of the Hippogriff, Ollivanders, the land’s stores, or its restaurants as part of this closure.

That leaves plenty to experience, but it does not make the missing attraction insignificant.

Forbidden Journey is housed inside Hogwarts Castle, the visual and experiential centerpiece of Hogsmeade. Universal describes the official attraction as a combination of motion simulation, physical environments, and a flight above the castle grounds with Harry and his friends. It has a 48-inch minimum height requirement and ordinarily accepts Universal Express Pass.

Guests can still photograph the castle and explore Hogsmeade during the closure. Universal has not clarified whether visitors will be allowed inside any portion of the elaborate Hogwarts queue while the ride is unavailable.

What February 2027 Guests Will Experience Differently

The practical consequence is straightforward: travelers visiting Islands of Adventure exclusively between February 8 and February 19 will not get another opportunity to ride Forbidden Journey unless they change their dates or return later.

Visitors with flexible multi-day tickets should consider scheduling Islands of Adventure before February 8 or after the listed closure period. Anyone arriving near February 20 should verify the ride’s status instead of building an entire morning around an assumed reopening.

Harry Potter fans will have alternatives across Universal Orlando. Hogsmeade contains Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Flight of the Hippogriff, while the Hogwarts Express connects eligible Park-to-Park ticket holders with Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida. Epic Universe also contains The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic.

Those alternatives soften the operational impact, but they do not replace the same experience. Forbidden Journey was the attraction around which Orlando’s original Wizarding World was built. Inside the Magic’s 2010 review of Forbidden Journey described the ride as the climactic chapter of an experience beginning at Hogsmeade’s entrance, while an earlier first look inside the original Wizarding World documented how dramatically the land raised expectations for themed environments.

That history explains why losing one ride can still change the emotional center of a park day.

The Closure Continues a Maintenance Pattern

This will not be the first extended interruption for the attraction. Inside the Magic documented a November 2025 maintenance closure that lasted more than a week. Earlier coverage also examined the attraction’s scheduled 2025 downtime and a subsequent update to the Forbidden Journey experience.

That documented history makes periodic maintenance unsurprising. It does not establish what Universal intends to accomplish in February 2027.

For now, the calendar offers certainty about the disruption—not the work behind it. Guests should treat February 8 through February 19 as unavailable dates, keep watching for schedule revisions, and resist assuming that a lengthy closure automatically means a noticeably altered ride.

Hogwarts is staying in place. Its signature adventure is simply taking a 12-day break from accepting new students.
