Universal Is Opening Another Theme Park After Epic Universe, But This One Targets a Different Kind of Guest

New Dining Experiences Announced

For theme park fans, the last few years have felt like a turning point. Universal has not simply been adding attractions or refreshing old favorites. It has been reshaping what a Universal vacation can look like, especially for families who have watched the company grow from a movie-inspired destination into a serious multi-day vacation powerhouse.

That momentum became impossible to ignore when Epic Universe opened in Orlando in 2025. For many guests, it marked the kind of expansion that does not happen often: a massive new gate, new lands, new hotel options, and a fresh reason to rethink an entire Central Florida vacation.

But fans are noticing something else now. Universal’s next major move is not just about bigger thrills, taller coasters, or another portal into a blockbuster world. A surprising change is unfolding in another part of the country, and it could reshape how young families experience the Universal brand for the first time.

Universal’s Next Theme Park Is Coming Sooner Than Some Fans Expected

Universal Kids Resort is officially set to open in 2026 in Frisco, Texas, bringing a brand-new regional theme park experience to families outside the traditional Orlando and Hollywood markets. Universal describes the project as a theme park specifically designed for families with young children, with kid-friendly rides, interactive shows, themed lands, food, merchandise, and an on-site hotel experience.

That timing is what makes this expansion feel so significant. Epic Universe officially opened on May 22, 2025, as Universal Orlando Resort’s fourth theme park, with more than 50 experiences across five themed worlds, including SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, Dark Universe, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, and Celestial Park.

Now, just one year later, Universal is preparing to open another major destination. This time, however, the company is not chasing the same audience in the same way.

This New Resort Is Built for Smaller Children, Not Epic Universe Thrill Seekers

The biggest question fans are already asking is obvious: Will Universal Kids Resort compete directly with Epic Universe?

The answer appears to be no — at least not in the traditional sense.

Epic Universe was built as a major Orlando expansion designed to transform Universal Orlando into a weeklong vacation destination. Universal Kids Resort, by contrast, is a more focused, family-first concept built around younger children and their parents. NBCUniversal calls it a first-of-its-kind resort designed and developed for families with young children, centered on play, discovery, imagination, and inclusivity.

That distinction matters. For families with toddlers or early elementary-age kids, a giant thrill-heavy vacation can sometimes feel overwhelming. Height requirements, long walking distances, intense attractions, and full-day touring strategies can make even the most exciting theme park feel exhausting.

Universal Kids Resort seems designed to solve a different problem: giving families a Universal experience that feels approachable from the start.

Seven Themed Lands Could Make This a Major Family Draw

Universal has confirmed seven themed lands for Universal Kids Resort, and the lineup is clearly aimed at households with younger kids. The lands include DreamWorks’ Shrek’s Swamp, Jurassic World Adventure Camp, Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants Bikini Bottom, Illumination’s Minions vs. Minions: Bello Bay Club, DreamWorks’ TrollsFest, DreamWorks’ Puss in Boots Del Mar, and the Isle of Curiosity.

That mix is important because it gives Universal a powerful spread of characters families already know. Shrek and Donkey bring nostalgia for parents. SpongeBob remains one of Nickelodeon’s most recognizable icons. Minions continue to be a major draw for kids, while Trolls and Gabby’s Dollhouse-style experiences lean into bright, playful, music-filled worlds.

Guests are already reacting to what this could mean for family travel because the resort is not simply a miniature version of Universal Orlando. It is a purpose-built children’s theme park with rides, play areas, character encounters, sensory gardens, dining, and merchandise designed around young guests.

Frisco, Texas Could Give Universal a Powerful New Audience

The Texas location may be one of the smartest parts of the project. Frisco places Universal Kids Resort in a fast-growing region where families may want a theme park experience without committing to a full Orlando vacation.

That could be a major win for parents. A regional Universal park means shorter trips, potentially lower travel costs, and easier access for families across Texas and surrounding states. It also gives Universal a way to introduce young children to its characters before those families eventually graduate into larger destinations like Universal Orlando Resort.

In other words, Universal Kids Resort may not steal guests from Epic Universe. It may create future Epic Universe guests.

That is the long game. A child who first meets SpongeBob, Shrek, the Minions, or a baby dinosaur in Frisco could later become the kind of Universal fan who wants to experience Harry Potter, Nintendo, Jurassic World, and bigger thrills in Orlando.

Universal’s Expansion Strategy Is Starting to Look Much Bigger

Universal Kids Resort also includes a hotel designed with families in mind, with rooms that sleep up to five or six guests, family suites, a quick-service restaurant, pool, fitness room, game room, and other resort amenities.

That tells fans this is not just a quick-stop amusement park. It is a true resort concept, but scaled for a different stage of family life.

For guests going forward, this could mean Universal is building a more complete vacation pipeline: young families start in Texas, thrill-seeking families expand into Orlando, and longtime fans continue following Universal across multiple destinations.

Epic Universe may still be Universal’s biggest recent statement. But Universal Kids Resort could become something just as important in a quieter way: the first Universal park built around the youngest fans, and possibly the beginning of a much bigger family-focused future.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
