Universal Announces Major Hogwarts Castle Transformation for September 5

One of Universal Orlando Resort’s most recognizable landmarks will look dramatically different beginning next month.

Universal has announced that Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle is returning to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade beginning September 5.

The nighttime experience transforms the familiar Hogwarts Castle with projections, music, dark creatures, and some of the biggest villains from the Harry Potter stories.

It will also mark the beginning of nearly two months of darker Wizarding World entertainment across Universal Orlando.

Hogwarts Changes After Sunset

Guests walking through Hogsmeade during the daytime will still find the Hogwarts Castle they know towering above Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

After sunset on select dates, the atmosphere changes.

Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle uses the castle’s exterior for a nighttime spectacle featuring some of the Wizarding World’s darkest characters and creatures.

Dementors appear to swarm Hogwarts alongside Death Eaters and other sinister figures as music accompanies the changing imagery.

Eventually, Lord Voldemort appears as the Dark Lord calls upon his followers and takes control of the castle.

Universal will begin presenting the experience September 5, with select performances continuing through November 1.

Universal Celebrates 25 Years of Harry Potter

There’s another reason the timing stands out this year.

Universal is celebrating Harry Potter’s 25 Years of Magic, recognizing the 25th anniversary of the first Harry Potter movie.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) introduced movie audiences to Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort, and the larger Wizarding World.

The franchise would eventually become a major part of Universal Orlando Resort.

As we previously covered, Universal has continued expanding the Wizarding World beyond its original Hogsmeade location.

Diagon Alley later opened at Universal Studios Florida, while The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic debuted alongside Universal Epic Universe in May 2025.

Now, Universal is using the fall season to bring a darker experience back to its original Orlando Wizarding World land.

Diagon Alley Gets Its Own Dark Transformation

Hogwarts won’t be the only place affected.

Beginning August 27, Death Eaters will return to Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida on select dates.

Rather than watching the characters through a projection show, guests can encounter Lord Voldemort’s followers roaming the streets.

The Death Eaters will remain part of the experience on select dates through November 1.

That August 27 debut also arrives immediately before Universal Studios Florida begins another major fall tradition. Halloween Horror Nights officially starts August 28.

Dark Arts Returns September 5

The Hogwarts Castle transformation begins just over a week later.

Starting September 5, guests visiting Universal Islands of Adventure on select nights can watch Hogwarts change once the sun goes down.

The experience doesn’t permanently alter Hogwarts Castle or replace Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Instead, projections and lighting transform the castle for the nighttime presentation.

Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle and the Death Eaters in Diagon Alley will both continue through November 1.

For Harry Potter fans visiting Universal Orlando this fall, the Wizarding World is about to get considerably darker.
