Disney Just Made Walking Into Magic Kingdom Feel a Lot Different
Walt Disney World Resort is quietly making changes to the building that houses the main Mickey Mouse meet-and-greet at the Magic Kingdom. On Wednesday, Disney Park guests noticed several new additions to the exterior of the Town Square Theatre, suggesting that Disney may be refurbishing the structure. Here’s what we know.
Town Square Theatre
The Town Square Theatre, on the right when guests enter Magic Kingdom Park, is home to the Magician Mickey Mouse meet-and-greet, the most reliable place to meet the most famous character at the original Central Florida Disney park. It also houses a gift shop, restrooms, and the waiting area for Tony’s Town Square Restaurant, a Table-Service dining location next door.

At D23 Expo 2017, Walt Disney World Resort announced plans to bring live, Broadway-style entertainment to the Magic Kingdom with what would be called the Main Street Theatre. The building, inspired by Kansas City’s Willis Wood Theatre, was expected to replace the Town Square Theatre. Groundbreaking began sometime after, but the project was quietly canceled in 2018 and, following the COVID-19 pandemic, it was never mentioned again.
Though Walt Disney World Resort appears to have squashed its plans for a more expansive overhaul of the theatre building on Main Street, U.S.A., Disney is currently doing some refurbishment on the building.
Minor Refurbishment Project

On February 18, WDWNT reported that signs of a minor refurbishment had appeared on the exterior of the Town Square Theatre at Magic Kingdom Park. According to their reporting, a scrim has been installed over a small window at the top of the roof, where multiple panels of roof tile have already been missing for several years. See a photo below:
This image doesn’t show it, but Disney cast members also installed a white scrim on the porch railing on the right side of the building, indicating plans to repaint or otherwise refurbish it. It’s unclear whether more scrim will be added in the coming days or weeks.

As with most minor refurbishment projects, Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t issued a public statement about the ongoing work at the Town Square Theatre. The Mickey Mouse meet-and-greet, Tony’s Town Square Restaurant, and all other operations inside the building are continuing as usual.
Has a refurbishment project ever impacted your visit to the Central Florida Disney parks? Disney Dining would love to hear from you in the comments.
