Top 11 Lies About Walt Disney World

There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to Walt Disney World. Unfortunately, some people will let these lies stop them from planning that first trip. There is a reason why Walt Disney World is one of the top vacation destinations on the planet, but not everyone gets it. Here are 11 things that some people will say about Walt Disney World that just aren’t true. Don’t let any of these stop you from planning the holiday of a lifetime.

11. You Have to Know the Movies

Some people stay away from Walt Disney World because they aren’t huge fans of any of the Disney movies. You do not need to know the stories or the backgrounds in order to go. While you might pick up little things in Peter Pan’s Flight if you’ve seen the movie, anyone can enjoy flying over London. There is no test of knowledge of Disney movies at the front gate, so don’t let not being a huge Disney movie fan stop you from going.

10. There’s Only “Theme Park” Food

There are some food items that you will find at most theme parks. These include cold pizza, burnt hamburgers, and greasy chicken nuggets. That is not what the food is like at Walt Disney World. While you’ll find incredible pizza, burgers, and chicken dishes, there are other choices as well. You can dine on specialties from around the world, enjoy signature restaurants, and munch delicious baked goods. There are unique choices in each park, and if you head outside of the parks you’ll find even more to savor. The food is so good that dining could become your favorite part of your vacation.

9. Characters Are Boring

When you think about characters with your mind, the whole thing doesn’t really make a lot of sense. Logically, you might think that characters are just people in costumes, and that makes them nothing all that special. Disney is all about magic, and that’s why you need to see characters through your heart instead of with your mind. All it takes is the look on a child’s face when he or she is able to hug Mickey for the first time in order to know that the characters are real. If you still don’t believe, just skip the characters. There are plenty of other things to do.

8. It Costs too Much

Most vacations are expensive, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t need a break sometimes. There are ways to save on a Walt Disney World vacation. Travel during the off season. Drive instead of fly. Bring food into the parks to save on meals. Stay off property, or at a Value Resort. Work with a travel agent, which should not cost you anything extra. Budget for souvenirs, and pay with cash. If you plan carefully and stick with it, you might discover that a Walt Disney World vacation is more affordable than you imagined.

7. It’s too Hot

Central Florida does get extremely hot and humid, especially during the summer months. So don’t travel during the summer! Winter in Florida can bring wonderful temperatures and little rain. If you can only travel during the summer, don’t let the heat keep you away. Drink plenty of water, and enjoy indoor restaurants, shows, and rides during the heat of the day. Thousands of people brave the parks every day in the summer. They don’t let the heat stop them, and neither should you.

6. It’s Only for Girls

When most people picture Walt Disney World, Cinderella Castle immediately comes to mind. They then assume that it is all about princesses, and that there is nothing there for the boys. Forget for a moment that not all girls love the princesses. Forget as well that there are boys who adore the princesses. There is so much to do at Walt Disney World that princesses and fairy tales are only part of what you’ll encounter. There is plenty for everyone to do, boy or girl, young or old.

5. It’s Not for Adults

If there is nothing for adults to do at Walt Disney World, why is it one of the top honeymoon destinations in the country? Walt Disney World isn’t for kids, it’s for the kid in anyone. If you want more adult activities, there are spas, meals created by celebrity chefs, carriage rides, roller coasters, nightclubs, concerts, wine tastings, and much more. If you still aren’t convinced, many of the restaurants have specialty cocktails created for the 21 and up crowd. You don’t have to be a kid or have a kid with you in order to have a great time at Walt Disney World.

4. It’s Just a Theme Park

This is actually two lies tied up as one. First, too many people think that Walt Disney World is only the Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney World is not “just a theme park”, it is four theme parks, two water parks, a shopping and entertainment district, and more. Second, visiting a theme park an hour from your house is not the same thing as visiting Walt Disney World. A local theme park is good for a couple of hours of fun. Walt Disney World is a vacation destination. There’s so much to do that you won’t be able to do it all in one trip.

3. There Are No Thrill Rides

There is almost an element of truth to this statement. The largest thrills in the Orlando area are not found at Walt Disney World. But that does not mean that there aren’t thrills to be found. What isn’t thrilling about dropping 13 stories over and over again, or going from zero to 60 before you have a chance to take a breath? Don’t forget the thrill of Summit Plummet! There are thrill rides at Walt Disney World. What makes them even more special is that they all have themes, so you’ll be part of a story.

2. You Only Need to Go Once

There are people who like to go on a different vacation each year. They plan to hit various hot spots across the country or even across the planet. Those people most likely have Walt Disney World on their “someday” list, but they only plan to visit once. The problem with visiting only once is that you will be missing out on so much! Not only is there too much to see and do in one vacation that you won’t get it all in, things are constantly changing. Those who have only visited once in the past will miss out on Pandora – The World of Avatar, Toy Story Land, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, exciting new dining and entertainment options at Disney Springs, and so much more. Walt Disney World is not a “see it only once” type of destination. That is what makes Disney Vacation Club so popular. It allows guests to visit over and over again.

1. There Are Better Places to Vacation

Granted, Walt Disney World is not for everyone. That said, there is a reason why so many people return as often as they possibly can. There is fun around every corner at Walt Disney World, so why vacation anywhere else? You’ll find thrills, fine dining, water sports, culture, history, and ways for everyone in your group to grow closer. All of the Disney Parks on the planet are special, but at Walt Disney World you can leave the outside world behind and get lost in the magic. That is why people keep coming back year after year.

About PaulaK

I grew up in Western Massachusetts. When I was nine my family went to Disneyland and I was hooked. I grew up, attended New England College in Henniker, NH and eventually moved to Virginia. I worked as a disc jockey, married and became a full time mom when our daughter was born. Fast forward several years. In 2010 we moved to Central Florida and my Disney obsession grew. I now work as a freelance writer and spend my spare time in the parks. Under the name Paula Brown I penned the novels Dream Wanderers and The Coffee Cruiser. I also am a co-author of Dining at Walt Disney World: The Definitive Guide. I'm obsessed with Star Wars, so this is a good time to live in Central Florida. I've been a vegetarian for well over a decade, a choice that my daughter eventually made as well. While my husband still hasn't joined us fully he has given up most meats except for seafood. I was relieved to find that vegetarian dining is not difficult at Walt Disney World.
