End of an Era: Disney World’s Tomorrowland Will Never Be the Same

Walt Disney World Resort is finally completing a Tomorrowland rock repainting project that stalled two-and-a-half years ago—but the new color scheme is drastically different from what was originally planned for the iconic Magic Kingdom Park land.

Crews were spotted working in the drained Cinderella Castle moat on February 23. WDWNT reported that instead of restoring rocks to their light blue-gray 2016 color, Disney is painting them a blue-black.

Disney Dining reported on February 11 that Walt Disney World Resort had finally resumed work on Tomorrowland entrance rocks near Cinderella Castle. Disney cast members began repainting faded blue rocks nearly three years ago before the project mysteriously stopped.

The partially completed rocks faded further in the Central Florida sun, making the unfinished work increasingly obvious. Walt Disney World Resort restarted the project this month without a public announcement.

Mismatched Color Schemes Everywhere

Rolling planters block a walkway near the rocks on the Cinderella Castle side of the bridge into Tomorrowland, where most work is happening. The opposite side near Tomorrowland Terrace displays a chaotic mix: some rocks show light blue-gray from the paused 2023 restoration, while others remain very faded gray from before that project began.

With the moat drained for the ongoing Cinderella Castle repainting, portions of the Tomorrowland rocks’ natural brown color are visible to Magic Kingdom Park guests.

Walt Disney World Resort has not explained the project or provided a completion timeline. The shift to blue-black marks a significant departure from Tomorrowland’s previous aesthetic, fundamentally altering the land’s appearance at its main entrance.
