After Losing Beloved 3D Attraction, The Muppets Take Over Marvel

Earlier this year, longtime Disney fans experienced complete and utter heartache when Muppet*Vision 3D closed its doors at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The 3D show, a Jim Henson original dating back to 1991, had entertained generations with Kermit, Miss Piggy, and Gonzo’s chaotic antics.

But with the attraction — and the surrounding Grand Avenue area — being cleared to make way for a new Monsters, Inc.-themed land, Muppet devotees were left wondering what the future might hold for their felt-covered friends.

The good news is that Disney hasn’t abandoned them. Next year, Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith will reopen with a brand-new Muppets theme, bringing the chaotic humor of Kermit and company to one of the park’s most thrilling rides.

That announcement alone proves Disney recognizes the Muppets’ enduring popularity. After all, few franchises can close one attraction and immediately be tapped to reimagine another.

And yet, the scope of what’s possible may be bigger than a single ride. Fans have been vocal about their love for the Muppets for decades, and the outpouring of disappointment at losing Muppet*Vision 3D shows just how deep the affection runs. Imagine if Disney went further than a coaster re-theme and leaned fully into that passion.

Could we one day see a Muppet land — complete with rides, restaurants, and stage shows — that gives Jim Henson’s creations the scale they deserve? It wouldn’t be the first time a cult-favorite property got expanded into its own area, and with the Muppets’ mix of nostalgia and comedy, the potential is undeniable.

Beyond the parks, the Muppets are everywhere this year: Marvel Comics is featuring them on variant covers this October for their 70th anniversary, and the beloved Muppet Christmas Carol is returning to theaters with a live orchestra in the U.K. Clearly, Disney and audiences alike know that Kermit and his friends still have a place in pop culture.

For now, the Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster makeover is reason enough for fans to celebrate. But it’s also proof of something bigger — that the Muppets’ story inside the parks isn’t over, and may only just be getting started.
