The ‘Jurassic Park’ Movies Are Seemingly Finished

Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) has landed an Academy Award nomination, becoming the first sequel in the series to be recognized by the Oscars since The Lost World in 1997—and between that milestone and its massive box-office haul, another film is likely inevitable.

Per an official report from Industrial Light & Magic, Rebirth has been named as one of five nominees in the Best Visual Effects category at the 98th Academy Awards, alongside Avatar: Fire and Ash, F1, The Lost Bus, and Sinners. ILM handled the film’s VFX work, with nominees including David Vickery, Stephen Aplin, Charmaine Chan, and Neil Corbould.

The nomination is notable given the film’s rocky reception with audiences and critics. Directed by Gareth Edwards and written by David Koepp, Jurassic World Rebirth was released last summer as a soft reset for the franchise.

The story kills off most dinosaurs worldwide, a concept set up in Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Dominion (2022), before shifting the action to a new island, where a team is tasked with retrieving dinosaur DNA while facing mutant dinosaurs.

While reviews were mixed to negative—the script, characters, and creatures like the Distortus Rex all came under fire—the film was a major commercial success. Rebirth grossed $869.1 million worldwide against a reported $180–225 million budget, making it the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2025.

Visually, the film earned praise. The Spinosaurus and Mosasaur sequences were frequently cited as highlights, continuing the franchise’s long-standing reputation for technical achievement, even when the storytelling falters.

With that financial success and now an Oscar nomination, Universal has zero reason to walk away. Reports suggest a sequel is already being discussed, with Gareth Edwards and cast members Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali said to be in negotiations to return. Either way, the series will undoubtedly continue under the World banner, which has brought it consistent box-office success since the 2015 rebranding.

Jurassic World Rebirth stars Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), Rupert Friend (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Mahershala Ali (The Green Book), Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (Dead Boy Detectives), Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs Lopez), Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool).

The 98th Oscars will be held on Sunday March 15, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.
