‘Star Wars’ Sequel Trilogy Could Be Replaced by Animated Reboot in Next Few Years
The Star Wars sequel trilogy remains one of the most divisive entries in the history of the faraway galaxy. Conflicting storytelling priorities, lack of long-term planning, and its depiction of beloved characters like Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) left fans divided, while forcing many to give up on the franchise altogether.
But if Disney and Lucasfilm ever want to repair that divide and restore faith, there might be one solution: a fully animated cinematic reboot trilogy that replaces Episodes VII–IX.

Animation has become the most reliable storytelling format in modern Star Wars. Television shows like The Clone Wars, Rebels, Tales of the Jedi, and The Bad Batch have built continuity with richer character focus than most live-action projects, even non-big screen releases such as The Mandalorian and Ahsoka.
A new sequel trilogy wouldn’t need to mimic the existing story, though. Instead, it could reinterpret the post-Return of the Jedi era in a more crowd-pleasing way.
Luke could be portrayed as a Jedi master who still grapples with failure but doesn’t abandon the Order entirely. Rey could still exist, but as someone trained early, growing into her power rather than leap-frogging over decades of experience. And Ben Solo’s tragic fall could be gradual, while at the same time fleshing out the strained relationship between his parents, Han Solo and Leia Organa.

Animation also sidesteps the need for digital de-aging and recasting controversy, letting legacy characters appear naturally without technology drawing attention to itself. A replacement trilogy wouldn’t erase the actors’ sequel contributions, either — it would simply elevate their characters with the thoughtful storytelling they’ve always deserved.
For now, the idea of a sequel trilogy reboot is nothing more than a dream, but stranger things have happened in the faraway galaxy since Disney purchased Lucasfilm, from the mystical realm known as the World Between Worlds to the fact that somehow, Palpatine returned.
