EPCOT Makes More Changes to Spaceship Earth Ahead of LONG Closure

Walt Disney World Resort has started making noticeable changes to Spaceship Earth at EPCOT, just weeks before the ride officially closes for a lengthy refurbishment.

Spaceship Earth, affectionately called the “EPCOT ball” by many Disney Park guests, first opened its doors on October 1, 1982. For over 40 years, it’s taken Walt Disney World Resort guests on an unforgettable journey through human history, from the dawn of time to a hopeful glimpse of the future. The attraction was originally slated to undergo a major modernization as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations at Walt Disney World Resort. Those plans, however, were put on hold indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the summer of 2025, Walt Disney World Resort confirmed that Spaceship Earth will undergo a significant refurbishment starting on August 25, 2025, though a definitive reopening date has not yet been announced. Disney has indicated that the ride will likely be ready to welcome guests again by the end of the year.

While guests have a few weeks to enjoy Spaceship Earth before the refurbishment closure, some changes are already taking place. On August 6, 2025, WDWNT reported that large panels on the side of the Project Tomorrow building (which is attached to Spaceship Earth) have already been replaced. The panels, which used to be white, now sport a fresh, shiny silver finish.

It’s unclear whether the original panels were entirely replaced or simply cleaned and refinished. Disney cast members will likely continue this work across the building, bringing all the panels up to the same new, polished standard. Walt Disney World Resort has not provided a timeline or specific details about the next stages of this exterior refurbishment project.
