Spaceship Earth Now Looks Different at Walt Disney World Resort

EPCOT’s most iconic landmark, Spaceship Earth, is currently closed as Walt Disney World Resort begins a carefully planned update to one of its most enduring attractions.

The gleaming geodesic sphere, standing 180 feet tall and covered in more than 11,000 triangular panels, has symbolized EPCOT since the park’s debut in 1982. Inside, guests experience a gentle journey through the history of human communication, from ancient cave paintings to today’s digital age. The beloved attraction has featured narration by Lawrence Dobkin, Walter Cronkite, Jeremy Irons, and most recently Dame Judi Dench, each bringing their own touch to the evolving story of innovation.

In late August 2025, Spaceship Earth temporarily closed for maintenance and refurbishment. The final day of operation before the update began was August 24, with the attraction going dark the next day. Crews have since been at work enhancing both the exterior and interior, including the replacement of some of the outer panels and a complete refresh of the entrance area.

Guests approaching World Celebration will soon notice that the entryway to Spaceship Earth has been repainted, revealing lighter gray and white hues in place of the previous blue tones. The new look, highlighted by WDWNT’s recent report, brings a modern finish that complements EPCOT’s evolving design.

The attraction’s refurbishment comes as part of Disney’s ongoing effort to maintain EPCOT’s blend of creativity and forward-thinking design. Although the park has seen fewer large-scale changes compared to other areas of Walt Disney World Resort, it continues to evolve through projects like the reimagined Test Track and the upcoming reopening of Spaceship Earth.

When the attraction officially reopens on October 25, guests will once again embark on a voyage through time that celebrates human progress—just as EPCOT has done for over four decades.
