A construction permit filed at Walt Disney World Resort on Monday has put Spaceship Earth back in the spotlight.
Imagineering Steps In

Walt Disney Imagineering filed a Notice of Commencement with the Orange County Comptroller’s Office on April 21, listing work at 2060 Avenue of the Stars — the address of Spaceship Earth, EPCOT’s signature geodesic sphere. The permit describes the scope as “Install Signage” and names Kentavo as the contractor, a company that has recently appeared on comparable filings at “it’s a small world” and Aloha Isle at Magic Kingdom Park and “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The key detail isn’t what the permit says, but who filed it. Walt Disney World Resort‘s Facility Assets Management team handles the paperwork for routine upkeep and infrastructure work. Imagineering’s name on a filing typically points to something guest-facing and intentional, not just a light fixture swap or a patch of paint.
Five Years in the Making

A comprehensive overhaul of the Spaceship Earth attraction had been planned for Walt Disney World Resort’s 50th anniversary in 2021, with Walt Disney Imagineering reportedly developing a substantial reimagining of the slow journey through the history of human communication. The COVID-19 pandemic shelved the project before any public-facing work began, and Spaceship Earth has remained in its current state ever since.
Whether Monday’s permit signals that the long-dormant overhaul is finally being dusted off remains an open question. The permit is valid for one year, leaving the door open for the work to be connected to an upcoming seasonal event rather than a full refurbishment. The EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival is scheduled for August, and the International Festival of the Holidays follows later in the year — both of which typically bring temporary signage and theming additions to various parts of the park.

Disney Dining will keep a close eye on any further developments at Spaceship Earth.
