Iconic Spires No More: Disney Confirms Space Mountain Makeover
For nearly five decades, Space Mountain has defined “Castle Park” skylines across the globe with its futuristic design and unmistakable spires. However, at one Disney park, the attraction’s iconic exterior is now being covered, repainted, and updated, marking a new chapter for one of Disney’s most recognizable theme park attractions.
On August 28, X (formerly Twitter) user @DLPReport shared photos from Disneyland Paris Resort, where construction crews are actively refurbishing the exterior of Space Mountain in Discoveryland.
“🔧 Refurbishment of the Space Mountain show building is going well:” the Disney Park guest wrote, alongside images of the once-colorful structure now blanketed in beige, gray, and white primer.
It remains unclear whether this marks the beginning of an entirely new color scheme or simply a refresh of the existing design. But the project isn’t just about paint. According to PixieDustdlp, crews are also installing upgraded exterior lighting. Once completed, Disneyland Paris Resort guests will notice the Discoveryland structure illuminated in new ways after dark.
Fortunately for thrill seekers, the roller coaster itself remains open. Disney Park guests can still climb aboard Hyperspace Mountain while its exterior undergoes this makeover.
This isn’t the first time Space Mountain has been reimagined. Walt Disney World Resort’s version opened in 1975, followed by Disneyland Resort’s in 1977. Over the years, versions also appeared at Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland. Both Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris eventually introduced the Star Wars-themed Hyperspace Mountain.
Tokyo Disney Resort is currently undertaking one of the biggest Space Mountain overhauls yet. The Disney park permanently closed its original Tomorrowland roller coaster in July 2024 and is currently building a completely new version, slated to open in 2027.
