Six Flags Theme Park Incident Causes Locked Gates as Emergency Crews Arrive on Scene

A theme park day has a fragile rhythm. Families arrive early, roller-coaster fans race toward their priority attraction, and every operating hour becomes part of the value guests expect from an expensive day out.

At Six Flags Magic Mountain, that rhythm never had a chance to begin normally Wednesday.

A power outage delayed the Valencia, California, theme park’s opening on August 5, 2026, keeping guests outside the gates until approximately 1 p.m. Power was eventually restored, but the interruption removed roughly two-and-a-half hours from a day scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.—and some rides still required additional time before returning to service.

The distinction matters: Magic Mountain did not close for the entire day, as some early descriptions of the incident suggested. It experienced a delayed opening before resuming operations.

Six Flags Magic Mountain Delays Opening After Power Outage

Six Flags first disclosed the disruption in a social-media statement, saying the park was experiencing a power outage and that its teams were assessing the situation.

“Our teams are assessing the situation and working to restore operations as safely and quickly as possible,” the park wrote. “We appreciate your patience and will share updates as they become available.”

Magic Mountain subsequently said it was working with Southern California Edison and pushed its opening to 1 p.m. The same notice appeared across the park’s website, including its scheduled ride closures page.

Southern California Edison told CBS Los Angeles that the interruption began at 9:15 a.m. Power was restored at 12:15 p.m., according to the utility, although the cause remained under investigation.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Magic Mountain said electricity had returned and its teams were completing required opening procedures. The park also cautioned that some attractions could face delays.

That final step is important at a coaster-heavy park. Restoring electricity does not allow every ride to begin carrying passengers immediately. Attractions must complete startup procedures and safety checks before reopening, meaning the return of power can precede the return of the full advertised experience.

Magic Mountain’s official scheduled-closure page listed X2 as unavailable Thursday, although Six Flags did not publicly connect that listed closure to Wednesday’s outage.

What the Outage Changed for Six Flags Guests

For visitors already waiting in Valencia, the practical consequence was lost time and uncertainty.

A 1 p.m. opening shortened the park’s scheduled day without providing guests with an immediate guarantee that every ride would be ready. That can materially change a visit at Magic Mountain, where guests may plan an entire itinerary around headline coasters and use the morning to reach popular attractions before queues build.

Six Flags did not publicly disclose how many guests were waiting, whether admission products were extended, or whether any compensation was offered. The company also did not report injuries.

Crucially, there is no official evidence that occupied rides stopped with guests aboard or that visitors required evacuation after the outage. Because the interruption began before the park’s scheduled opening, claims of a sudden mid-operation shutdown would require evidence that has not emerged.

Guests visiting after an interruption should check the Six Flags app and the park’s ride-status page rather than assuming restored power means every attraction is operating. Ride availability can change throughout any operating day, but restarting a park after a sitewide electrical interruption adds another layer of uncertainty.

Magic Mountain Has Faced Several Very Different Disruptions

Wednesday’s outage joins a run of interruptions at Magic Mountain, but the incidents should not be blended into a single safety narrative.

In May, law enforcement conducted a security sweep following a reported bomb threat, delaying the park’s opening until authorities determined there was no credible threat. Inside the Magic covered that delayed opening and the substantial police response.

A June brush fire beneath X2 produced more alarming images, but a different operational result. Firefighters contained the approximately half-acre blaze without reported injuries or structural damage, and the park remained open. Inside the Magic reported on the fire and response.

Weather has also interrupted operations. Magic Mountain closed early on New Year’s Eve and previously remained closed during Southern California wildfire conditions. Another weather-related closure in March 2025 kept the gates closed for the full day.

Those comparisons clarify Wednesday’s event. It was neither a routine ride breakdown nor a full-day park closure. It was a morning electrical failure that reduced operating time and required an attraction-by-attraction recovery.

Power returned. The lost hours did not.
