SeaWorld San Diego has revealed that one of its flagship attractions will undergo a significant overhaul in 2025.

With 2024 marking 20 years since the opening of Journey to Atlantis, it was only a matter of time before the ride received some much-needed updates.

Now, it’s finally getting the TLC it deserves. “Next year, the ride will be reinvented,” said SeaWorld San Diego in a statement (via The San Diego Union Tribune), “paying tribute to the original beloved version while adding new elements to create a more exciting and immersive experience than ever before.”

A cross between a log flume and a roller coaster, SeaWorld San Diego’s version of the ride “lets you explore a lost civilization and experience an action-adventure with splashing thrills!” It’s currently closed for scheduled maintenance, during which it will undergo its updates.

While there’s no opening date just yet, SeaWorld – which has recently doubled down on its thrill rides as it continues to distance itself from its reputation for keeping marine mammals in captivity – has confirmed that it will reopen in 2025.

Comparison with Other SeaWorld Attractions

Journey to Atlantis is arguably SeaWorld’s flagship attraction, holding the status of its first thrill ride. While San Diego’s version is down for refurbishment, two other versions can be found at SeaWorld San Antonio and SeaWorld Orlando.

All three versions are extremely different from each other. While San Diego has the lengthiest roller coaster section, SeaWorld Orlando’s version of the ride (the original) has more extensive dark ride sections in the middle. San Antonio has the most basic version of the three rides, with no dark ride elements.

Recently, SeaWorld Orlando has started shuttering Journey to Atlantis on days with low attendance. The ride also received some light damage during Hurricane Milton in October, with a huge hole left ripped on the show building’s exterior.

Delays for Jewels of the Sea

Alongside the Journey to Atlantis update, SeaWorld San Diego has announced the upcoming exhibit Jewels of the Sea: A Jellyfish Experience has been delayed to 2025. Designed to captivate guests with its exquisite jellyfish display, this new attraction is set to become one of the park’s first fully immersive and interactive aquariums.

Featuring three unique galleries, the Jewels of the Sea will educate visitors to the Mission Bay theme park on jellyfish biology and ecology. With innovative lighting and thematic storytelling components, visitors are promised an engaging experience unlike any other. The park plans to showcase one of the nation’s tallest jelly cylinders and a touchable water globe filled with jellyfish.
