The summer crowds had arrived, but the day would not unfold as planned.
SeaWorld San Diego has spent the season balancing two identities: a marine-life destination built around animal presentations and a Southern California theme park competing for thrill seekers with attractions such as Emperor, Electric Eel, Manta, and Arctic Rescue.
Summer also extends the park’s operating day beyond its usual rhythm. Guests can move from daytime rides and animal encounters into evening entertainment, making the Mission Bay property a full-day destination during one of the busiest periods on its calendar.
A major addition to the 2026 schedule is Ocean of Dreams, a 12-minute nighttime production featuring 600 illuminated drones above Mission Bay. The show was scheduled to run nightly through August 9 before shifting to weekends during the remainder of the Summer Spectacular season.
That carefully arranged schedule collapsed Friday, July 31, when an electrical outage brought much of SeaWorld San Diego to a standstill. The disruption eventually forced the entire theme park to close, sending guests home hours earlier than expected.
Electrical Failure Brings Operations to a Halt
San Diego Gas & Electric reported that the outage began shortly after noon. Its outage map showed nearly two dozen affected customers, including SeaWorld San Diego, as crews worked to identify and repair the problem.
The park initially described the outage as affecting only part of the property. However, the situation quickly spread across guest-facing operations, interrupting attractions, animal presentations, food service, restrooms, and scheduled entertainment.
SeaWorld spokesperson Tracy Spahr said the company was working with SDG&E to restore power as quickly as possible. The park also emphasized that the outage had not compromised the systems supporting its animals.
“All animal care and life support systems remain fully operational. The safety and well-being of our guests, ambassadors, and animals remain our highest priority,” SeaWorld said.
Animal-care operations continued while the guest experience unraveled elsewhere. SeaWorld maintained that the outage did not affect the welfare of the animals housed at the San Diego park.
Emergency crews also responded during the disruption. The San Diego Fire Department investigated a report of smoke coming from a building west of SeaWorld.
Firefighters found no active fire at the scene, but they confirmed that an electrical issue was present. SDG&E later said the problem involved equipment belonging to SeaWorld, although the precise cause remained under investigation Friday afternoon.
Inside the park, guests began encountering abrupt cancellations and closed facilities with little warning.
“We were at the orca show, and they just didn’t do the show,” said Paul Addicott, who was visiting from London with his family.
Addicott said the presentation’s screen went down before the show could proceed. His family later tried to use the restrooms but was told to leave because the facilities did not have power.
The loss of electricity also affected food service. Visitor Maria Rodriguez said she had submitted a mobile food order shortly before the outage but could not collect it after operations stopped.
Rodriguez said employees provided limited information as the situation developed. Her family eventually left SeaWorld because they were hungry and could not access the food they had ordered.
Guests Sent Home as SeaWorld Cancels the Day
SDG&E initially estimated that electricity could be restored by 10 p.m. SeaWorld ultimately decided not to wait, closing the entire park for the rest of the day and directing remaining guests toward the exits.
The closure eliminated hours of planned operations during a peak summer Friday. Roller coasters, shows, restaurants, and other guest services remained unavailable as the park ended its operating day early.
SeaWorld confirmed that affected ticket holders would not lose the value of their admission. Guests who purchased tickets for July 31 could use them to visit on another day or request a refund.
The timing added to the disruption. SeaWorld San Diego’s Summer Spectacular runs on select dates through September 7, bringing extended entertainment and seasonal experiences to the park.
Ocean of Dreams was among the offerings canceled by the shutdown. The drone show had been scheduled to illuminate the sky above Mission Bay that evening, alongside other nighttime animal experiences and summer programming.
The park’s website continued displaying its seasonal event information following the outage. Visitors with upcoming plans were advised to review SeaWorld’s official operating calendar and mobile app for current hours, attraction availability, and show schedules.
Initial reports did not confirm whether any guests became stranded aboard attractions when power failed. No injuries were announced in connection with the outage or the subsequent evacuation of the park.
SeaWorld San Diego reopened at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, resuming operations after the unexpected shutdown. The investigation into the electrical failure continued as the park returned to its summer schedule.
