Planet Hollywood Media Event at Walt Disney World

On Tuesday, April 2 I was part of a media group that was invited to Planet Hollywood at Disney Springs. We were there to sample some of their specialties, and enjoy the atmosphere. They treated us very well, and everyone seemed to have a great time.

If you are thinking about making a reservation for Planet Hollywood, keep in mind that this is not the place for a quiet meal. There is a large screen that covers most of one wall, and there is music blaring almost constantly. Videos from popular artists such as Taylor Swift and Maroon 5 played while we dined. From time to time, a singalong song would play. We heard YMCA and Sweet Caroline, as well as some popular Disney classics such as Let It Go. The diners when we were there really got into the fun. The words were on the screen, and a good percentage of those there were singing along.

The main reason why we were at Planet Hollywood was to sample the food. The menu has a good number of signature cocktails. Many of them are served in souvenir glasses. I opted for the La La Land Lemonade. This is one of the nonalcoholic specialties, and it was refreshing. It’s strawberry lemonade with the perfect balance of sweet and tart.

We were brought several appetizers to try. The presentation alone is impressive. We were brought the World Famous Chicken Crunch, the High Roller Sampler, and the Hummus Trio. At the table where I was seated the Hummus Trio was the biggest hit. I wasn’t surprised. I’ve had it before, and it is some of the best hummus that I have ever enjoyed. I could make a whole meal out of it.

We were also offered several entrees. Some of the dishes are the creations of celebrity chef Guy Fieri, who helped to update the menu after Planet Hollywood underwent a major refurbishment. One of the most famous of his creations is the Bacon Mac-n-Cheese. This is not your traditional mac and cheese with bacon added. It is a burger, with bacon and mac and cheese on top. The dish is gigantic, and it comes with a side of triple fries. If you plan to order it, you might want to consider sharing, unless you’re a big eater.

I had Morgan’s Veggie Burger. At first I was a bit worried about the consistency of it because it was a bit on the mushy side. There was no need to worry. It was messy, but it was also quite good. It was also huge, in fact I packed part of it up and gave the other half to my husband when I got home. It also came with triple fries. These are seasoned fries that are cut three different ways. They were delicious.

We were also served dessert. The Planet Meltdown is a chocolate ball that is brought to the table. A server will then pour hot chocolate sauce on top, and it melts before your eyes. There is fudge cake, as well as other goodies inside. We also sampled all three flavors of Star Jars (Brownie Cheesecake, Banana Pudding, and Key Lime Pie), and the Sticky Toffee Pudding. That one was my favorite dessert, it had a lot of texture to add to the flavors. There was also a Brownie Sundae Martini. This is a giant ice cream creation in an even larger martini glass. It’s for six to eight people. The sundae is made of vanilla and chocolate ice cream, brownies, and caramel and chocolate sauces. It’s topped with a mound of whipped cream and a cherry.

No meal description of Planet Hollywood would be complete without mentioning their Supernova Shakes. There are three to choose from: Chocolate Comet, Cosmic Cotton Candy, and Strawberry Big Bang. These shakes are considered beverages, but they are as filling as an entire meal. They all come with an extra or two on top. The chocolate shake is topped with chocolate candies and there are M&M’s running down the side of the glass. The strawberry shake has a decent sized piece of cake on top. The cotton candy shake is topped with, you guessed it, cotton candy, and also a lollipop. The cotton candy shake is very sweet, as you might expect. The shakes themselves are full of flavor.

If you’re headed to Planet Hollywood, make sure that you bring your appetite, because you will not leave hungry. The portions are more than generous, and the food is flavorful. Give yourself some extra time so that you can see the movie memorabilia that is throughout the restaurant. That’s part of what makes the atmosphere so special.

I’d like to thank Planet Hollywood for inviting me to the event. I’ll be back, especially for the hummus.

About PaulaK

I grew up in Western Massachusetts. When I was nine my family went to Disneyland and I was hooked. I grew up, attended New England College in Henniker, NH and eventually moved to Virginia. I worked as a disc jockey, married and became a full time mom when our daughter was born. Fast forward several years. In 2010 we moved to Central Florida and my Disney obsession grew. I now work as a freelance writer and spend my spare time in the parks. Under the name Paula Brown I penned the novels Dream Wanderers and The Coffee Cruiser. I also am a co-author of Dining at Walt Disney World: The Definitive Guide. I'm obsessed with Star Wars, so this is a good time to live in Central Florida. I've been a vegetarian for well over a decade, a choice that my daughter eventually made as well. While my husband still hasn't joined us fully he has given up most meats except for seafood. I was relieved to find that vegetarian dining is not difficult at Walt Disney World.
