Pirates of the Caribbean Officially Closes Its Doors at Disneyland

Disneyland Resort guests were left disappointed recently after Pirates of the Caribbean unexpectedly shut down mid-ride. Multiple visitors shared videos of their experience trapped on the New Orleans Square attraction.

Pirates of the Caribbean has been a fixture of Disneyland Park since it opened in 1967. The ride has undergone several updates throughout the years, including the addition of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise and an updated bride auction scene. The change was part of an effort to make the attraction more welcoming to female guests, many of whom didn’t like seeing women depicted as brides-for-sale.

The change was controversial. Some Disney Park guests argued that the update sanitized the truth of piracy, while others felt it wasn’t enough. One of the most vocal concerns came from a 2023 TikTok video posted by a female guest who felt like the male pirate animatronics gawked at women.

“I just think this is kind of a weird ride… It’s just a little bit rapey,” the guest said.

While the video attracted significant backlash from other users, some women in the comments shared similar sentiments, saying that the ride made them feel “violated” or like “entertainment” for the male audio-animatronics.

The recent technical issue that led to the ride’s temporary closure was unrelated to any of the concerns over its content. Last week, TikTok user @blissful_moments_disney shared a video of themselves and other riders stuck on the attraction, with a Captain Jack Sparrow animatronic repeatedly singing “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life For Me)” for several minutes.

According to both Disney Park guests, the ride was halted for around 15 to 20 minutes before it resumed.

Disneyland Resort typically doesn’t provide detailed information about technical disruptions, and this situation was no different. However, Pirates of the Caribbean eventually resumed normal operations and was running smoothly at the time of this article’s finalization.
