On Wednesday, Walt Disney World Resort was once again the scene of a troubling emergency response, with authorities called to a “person down” report just outside the perimeter of Magic Kingdom Park around 2:30 p.m. The incident is the latest in a series of tragedies at the Central Florida Disney parks, with a total of five confirmed guest deaths in less than one month.

The string of tragedies at Disney World began in mid-October with a heartbreaking incident at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Initial reports suggested a collision between a guest and the Monorail, but authorities later confirmed that Summer Equitz, a 31-year-old from Illinois, tragically died by suicide after falling from a balcony at the Deluxe Disney Resort. Equitz had arrived in Central Florida alone, and her family had reported her missing prior to the tragic incident.

Days later, on October 21, a guest in their 60s passed away due to natural causes at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. Less than a week after that, on October 23, Matthew Cohn, a 28-year-old man, also died by suicide after falling from Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Cohn had checked into a room on the 12th floor the previous evening, paying in cash.

The tragedies continued into this month. On November 2, a woman in her 60s died at Disney’s Pop Century Resort after a medical emergency. Authorities confirmed no foul play was involved. Then, on November 8, another guest at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort was found unresponsive and passed away from natural causes. Authorities have not disclosed further details on the identity of the guest.

While “person down” reports don’t always result in tragedy, many of the recent deaths at Walt Disney World Resort started as similar calls for assistance. Authorities have not released any additional information about the individual involved in this latest incident, and it remains unclear whether this is a medical distress situation or something more serious.

  1. A Disney visit just seems too stressful now speaking as an old timer who used to frequent in the 8o’s, 90’s and single digit 2000’s. Rules and travel between hotels, parks and attractions are too complicated anymore. I had less hassle traveling the guard gate at US bases and felt safer staying in the French Quarter as they keep gators off Canal, Royal, and Bourbon Streets. Maybe have an age limit no one over 40 years to stay on property to reduce morbidity. ( i.e. a warning instead of a height restriction post notice of a curmudgeon limit as to what an old timer has to endure). A casino seems to have better odds/returns than the parks and lines sometimes. On Pirates and Princess Day no one warned me there would be a milieu of half pint swashbucklers all swinging a toy cutlass at groin level and not a protective cup to be sold at any store in the Magic Kingdom! I missed riding POC that day having to leave for my own safety. I shall not give up tho, as I all ready have reservations for next year with my 4 year old grandaughter who is, actually a princess. Maybe I’ll buy her a magic wand so she can protect me !
