Newly Refurbished Disney World Ride is Opening, but Only for Cast Members

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will offer exclusive Disney World cast member previews from March 21-27 before reopening to the public on April 8, 2026. The Tomorrowland attraction has been closed since August 2025 for extensive refurbishment.

Disney World Preview Schedule

Cast members will be among the first to experience the updated ride during the week-long preview period. This gives Disney a chance to test new systems with real riders before the full public opening.

It also allows cast members working at Magic Kingdom to experience the attraction firsthand so they can answer guest questions knowledgeably.

Why These Disney World Changes Matter

The original Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin opened in 1998 as a Tomorrowland staple. For nearly three decades, riders have competed for the coveted Galactic Hero title by helping defeat Emperor Zurg.

However, the attraction faced several limitations:

Original System Issues:

  • Fixed blasters made accurate aiming difficult
  • Targets positioned at awkward angles were hard to hit
  • Guests couldn’t see scores until the end
  • Unclear whether shots actually registered

The refurbishment addresses these complaints while maintaining the core gameplay guests loved.

Technology Meets Classic Gameplay

Walt Disney Imagineering worked to refresh the experience for modern audiences while preserving the basic premise: helping Buzz Lightyear defeat Emperor Zurg by blasting targets and racking up points.

The handheld blasters represent the biggest technological upgrade. Guests now have the freedom to aim in any direction rather than being restricted by mounted guns.

The onboard video screens provide instant feedback, making the competitive element more engaging. Riders can see exactly how they’re performing against their vehicle partner in real time.

Interactive targets that react when hit eliminate the frustration of not knowing whether shots connected. This creates more satisfying gameplay and encourages repeat rides as guests try to improve their scores.

The Pixar Connection at Disney World

Buddy was developed with input from Pixar, ensuring the character fits within the established Toy Story universe. This collaboration maintains the consistency in storytelling and character design that audiences expect from Pixar productions.

The timing aligns with Toy Story 5, scheduled for release in June 2026. The new character expands the Star Command story beyond what appears in the films.

Broader Magic Kingdom Context

The refurbishment occurred during a busy period for Magic Kingdom:

  • Cars expansion (Piston Peak National Park) under construction in Frontierland
  • Villains land being built behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad undergoing reimagining (still closed)

The reopening of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin provides much-needed capacity as other attractions remain shuttered for their own updates.

What Disney World Guests Can Expect

Starting April 8, all guests can experience:

  • Easier aiming with handheld blasters
  • Instant score feedback
  • Interactive targets that respond when hit
  • New character and story elements
  • Better ride photos
  • Familiar mission with modern technology

For guests who grew up competing for Galactic Hero status, the refurbished attraction promises a familiar experience enhanced by 21st-century technology.

The cast member previews beginning March 21 will provide the first real-world test of whether these updates deliver on their promise.
