Netflix Axes Entire ‘Stranger Things’ Cast, Replacement Confirmed

Netflix is flipping the script on the Stranger Things universe. The streamer just revealed a brand new animated series is on the way — but don’t expect to hear any familiar voices. The fan-favorite cast is officially not returning for this one.

It’s Called ‘Stranger Things: Tales From ’85’

Yup, that’s the title. Netflix just announced that the animated series, first teased back in 2023, is finally ready to be shown off — with its world debut coming this summer at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.

This isn’t just a cartoon version of what we’ve already seen. This is something new. Completely new. We’re talking different characters, different stories, and most importantly — a different cast. You heard that right: no Millie Bobby Brown, no Finn Wolfhard, no Gaten Matarazzo. Nada.

Matt and Ross Duffer, the minds behind the original Netflix hit, are still steering the ship. They’re executive producing the series under their Upside Down Pictures banner, alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps. Animation duties are being handled by Eric Robles and Flying Bark Productions, the same team also behind Netflix’s upcoming Ghostbusters animated series.

The Duffers say this has been a dream project. “We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving,” they said via Netflix’s Tudum. “To see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling… The scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you!”

So… Why No OG Cast?

Let’s call it what it is — the original Stranger Things crew is moving on.

Millie Bobby Brown, who basically is Eleven, has made it crystal clear she’s ready to leave Hawkins behind. She’s called the show a “big chapter” of her life but says she’s “ready to close it.” With major movie roles, beauty brands, and a fast-growing career, she’s not looking back — and certainly not lending her voice to a spin-off cartoon.

The rest of the gang? Also quiet. No announcements from Finn, Caleb, or Sadie about joining this project. And let’s be real — if the OG squad was involved, Netflix would’ve already shouted it from the rooftops.

So far, Netflix is playing it cool with the plot. The title suggests an anthology-style show — possibly with standalone episodes set in the Stranger Things universe. It might link up with the original storyline, or it might not. The Duffer Brothers aren’t spilling.

What we do know is that fans will get their first peek at the new series during the Annecy Animation Festival this summer. As for a premiere date on Netflix? Still under wraps.

And Don’t Forget — Season 5 Is Still Coming

While this new animated series preps its debut, production on Season 5 of the live-action show is still underway. It’s set to wrap up the story of Eleven, Mike, Will, and the rest of the gang — for good. Expect that to drop sometime later this year.

For fans, it’s a weird place to be. One era is ending while another begins, but make no mistake: this cartoon isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about pushing the brand forward — and Netflix is betting big that audiences will still care about Hawkins, even without the kids who made it famous.

Stay tuned. This universe might be upside down, but it’s far from over.
