More Updates Around Walt Disney World After Hurricane Irma

Hurricane Irma descended upon the Central Florida area early this week leaving many residents of the area without power, fallen trees and various damage.  Walt Disney World managed to only sustain minor damage, plus a lot of fallen trees.  Guests staying at the resorts had power the entire time, thankfully, and Disney did all they could to keep guests calm, safe and entertained while they rode out the hurricane on property.  The theme parks and recreational activities around Walt Disney World completely closed for a couple days, with re-openings starting back on Tuesday, September 12th.  Not everything around Walt Disney World has re-opened yet, so we have the latest as to what guests can expected around property right now.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon is reportedly still closed in order to complete the remaining cleanup efforts.  We expect that it should likely re-open very soon, maybe even for the weekend.  We haven’t heard an official time when it is expected to re-open, but the calendar online shows hours for tomorrow, Saturday September 16th.

Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground are scheduled to re-open next week.  Until the resort re-opens, popular dining locations like Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue and Mickey’s Backyard Barbecue will also remain closed.  Guests are being refunded if they purchased admission the dining events.  Guests with reservations at the resort are being relocated to other resorts on property. The Treehouse Villas at Saratoga Springs also remain closed.

We have also learned that in the wake of Hurricane Irma that Disney will be paying the cast members for lost wages from not working on September 9th and 10th when the theme parks were closed. This is a really classy move by Disney, and a great way to help take care of their employees that depend on this income to live.

We will you keep you posted as we learn more in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma and how Walt Disney World is responding to the various efforts.

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
