Is There a Secret “Portal to Hell” at Disneyland?
Disneyland Park‘s Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride is known for its depiction of hell, but did you know that some Disney Parks fans feel there’s another “portal to hell” on the Matterhorn Bobsleds?
Mr Toad’s Wild Ride opened in 1955, and the Matterhorn followed in 1959. The latter takes guests on a thrilling bobsled journey through a mountain in the Alps, with special appearances by the Abominable Snowman. The former is a classic Fantasyland dark ride that puts guests in Mr. Toad’s shoes as he drives through London and the English countryside before crashing his car into a train and ending up in hell.
Even though hell is a canonical part of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride storyline, some Disney Parks fans believe the real “portal to hell” at Disneyland Park is on the Matterhorn Bobsleds. Redditor u/bchris24 recently shared this photo of the ride’s first tunnel as viewed from its loading station, arguing that “the lighting from the Matterhorn station at night makes it look like a portal to hell”:

Many Disney Parks fans agreed and recommended riding the Matterhorn Bobsleds at night for the spookiest experience.
“IMO the Matterhorn is quite a bit more ‘scary’ at night,” u/SensitiveDeer commented. “There’s really no lights inside, so for long portions of the ride you’re zipping around in the darkness! Much more thrilling that way.”
Others joked that the antique tubular steel roller coaster was “hell” on their backs.
“My spine would say that it is,” u/Hyro0o0 wrote.
“Ah, the spine’s POV of the Matterhorn,” u/RandomFunUsername replied.
Some Disney Parks fans suggested that Disneyland Resort should lean into the scarier side of the Matterhorn Bobsleds during the Halloween season.
“Make [Oogie Boogie Bash] a 2 park event and have this be how the ride looks,” u/necros_25 said.
