Major Football Team Is the Reason a Theme Park Project Is Now in Serious Doubt
Mattel Adventure Park was supposed to be open by now. Both of them.
The first location in Glendale, Arizona, has been delayed so many times since its 2021 announcement that the website no longer lists an opening date. It just says coming soon. A representative told the Arizona Republic in May 2026 that there is no update on an opening timeline. The Hot Wheels roller coasters are visible from Loop 101. Yet the park is not open.
The second location, planned for Bonner Springs, Kansas, as part of the Destination KCK entertainment district, was announced in 2024 with a 2026 opening target. That target has come and gone without a new date being announced. And now a new complication has entered the picture, with nothing to do with construction and everything to do with football.
The Chiefs Connection
New reporting has linked the Mattel Adventure Park Kansas City project to ongoing stadium discussions involving the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. The Destination KCK entertainment district in Bonner Springs, where the Mattel park was planned, has become entangled with the broader negotiations around where those franchises will play in the future. When NFL stadium discussions at that scale become connected to a development project, the uncertainty that follows is not minor or easily resolved.
No updated opening timeline for the Kansas City park has been announced. No official statement has addressed how the stadium discussions affect the Mattel Adventure Park component of the district specifically.
What Was Planned
The Kansas City location was designed to be a significant expansion of what Mattel and Epic Resort Destinations built in Glendale. The planned attractions included two Hot Wheels-themed roller coasters, the Bone Shaker and the Twin Mill Racer. Thomas and Friends: World of Sodor has five family-friendly rides. He-Man vs. Skeletor Laser Tag inside a Castle Grayskull fortress. An 18-hole mini golf course drawing from Mattel game brands, including Magic 8 Ball and Pictionary. A large-scale UNO climbing structure.
The Barbie component was built around the franchise’s cultural moment following the blockbuster film. A larger-than-life Barbie Beach House with hologram technology, a flying theater, and The Barbie Rooftop restaurant and bar were all part of the plan. The full package represented one of the more ambitious themed entertainment projects announced in the Kansas City region in years.
Where the Arizona Location Stands
The Glendale park has been delayed three times since its original 2022 opening target. The most recent postponement pushed the opening past late 2025 with no new date replacing it. VAI Resort, the larger development the Mattel park is part of, indicates on its website that it announces opening dates approximately nine months in advance. As of May 2026 that suggests a potential opening no earlier than February 2027 at the earliest if that timeline holds.
Mattel confirmed to our publication in 2024 that late 2024 remained the target. It is now mid-2026 and the website says coming soon.
Two Parks, No Dates
The pattern across both Mattel Adventure Park locations is one of consistent delay and absent timelines. Glendale has been delayed since 2021 and has no public opening date. Kansas City had a 2026 target that has passed and is now facing uncertainty tied to an NFL stadium negotiation involving one of the most prominent franchises in professional football.
The Hot Wheels coasters in Glendale are visible from the highway. The Barbie Beach House in Kansas City exists in planning documents. Neither is open and neither has a date that anyone is currently willing to commit to publicly.
Coming soon covers a lot of ground when you have been saying it for four years.
