More Magic Kingdom Updates Given After Confirmed All-Guest Closure in October

Big changes are arriving at Magic Kingdom Park this October, marking one of the most ambitious chapters in Walt Disney World Resort’s history. Guests visiting the park will experience both early closures and new beginnings as construction reshapes the western frontier of the beloved park.

Following the permanent closure of Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America on July 7, 2025, work began immediately on Disney’s newest land: Piston Peak National Park. Inspired by Pixar’s Cars universe, the expansion continues Disney’s transformation of Frontierland, reimagining the space once home to two of Magic Kingdom’s most iconic experiences. The Liberty Belle Riverboat—a staple attraction tied to the Rivers of America—was also retired as part of this redevelopment.

Piston Peak National Park adopts an approach known as “Parkitecture,” blending natural rock formations, towering trees, and rustic structures reminiscent of America’s national parks. Guests can explore ranger stations, scenic trails, and a grand central lodge that connects the new area to the wider Cars world. The land also introduces two new attractions: a more thrilling adventure and a family-friendly experience designed for younger visitors.

The shift represents a profound moment in the park’s history. Tom Sawyer Island, which opened in May 1973, offered generations of guests an interactive frontier escape, while Rivers of America, a fixture since Magic Kingdom’s opening day on October 1, 1971, stood as a symbol of the park’s pioneering spirit. Fans have shared mixed feelings about their removal—some celebrating the innovation, others lamenting the loss of classic Disney heritage.

In response, Josh D’Amaro and other Disney leaders have emphasized that this new direction honors Frontierland’s spirit of adventure while introducing storytelling that resonates with today’s audiences. Beyond Piston Peak, Disney has confirmed an upcoming Villains Land situated beyond Big Thunder Mountain, together forming Magic Kingdom’s largest expansion in over fifty years and bringing at least four brand-new attractions to the park.

Meanwhile, park hours are also shifting this fall. Guests visiting Magic Kingdom should note several scheduling updates throughout October. On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the park will close early at 6:00 p.m. for a private event associated with the Gartner IT Symposium/Expo, which runs from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m.

In addition, early closures will continue throughout the season during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, held on select nights in August, September, and October.

Not all the October news brings shorter days, however. Disney has also confirmed extended hours for several dates. On October 19, 24, and 25, Magic Kingdom opens at 8:00 a.m. with Early Entry at 7:30 a.m. The park will remain open until 11:00 p.m. on October 25. Between October 13–18, the same early opening applies, with extended hours on October 15 and October 18, also closing at 11:00 p.m.
