Magic Kingdom Ride Shutdown, Totally Taken Out of Theme Park

Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland is undergoing a major overhaul, with the Astro Orbiter attraction being completely dismantled as part of its ongoing refurbishment. Recently, all visible ride mechanics were removed from the towering third-floor platform, signaling significant work ahead. A large crane spotted earlier this month hinted at the scale of the project, and now it’s clear that Disney is taking the opportunity for an extensive update. While the themed structure remains in place for now, there’s speculation about whether it will stay or be revamped as part of the refurbishment.

Astro Orbiter is expected to return in the summer of 2025, though Disney has not provided a specific reopening date. Fans can still catch a glimpse of the refurbishment in progress from the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover, offering an elevated view of the work being done. Many are curious to see if the ride will receive new theming or significant improvements to its ride system.

Astro Orbiter’s refurbishment is just one of many changes coming to Disney World in 2025. Several major attractions across the parks are set for closures and overhauls, making way for exciting new experiences. In Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will temporarily close for a much-needed refurbishment, with speculation about new effects and enhancements being added to the beloved Frontierland coaster.

EPCOT’s Test Track is also set to undergo a massive redesign, with Disney working alongside Chevrolet to reimagine the ride with a modern look and cutting-edge technology. The ride is expected to be closed for most of the year, with a reopening slated for late 2025.

Hollywood Studios will see the closure of MuppetVision 3D to make way for an exciting Monsters, Inc.-themed attraction. While details remain scarce, the addition aligns with Disney’s ongoing efforts to expand Pixar’s presence in the park. Meanwhile, over at Animal Kingdom, big changes are coming with the closure of Dinoland U.S.A. in early 2025. The area will be transformed into lands inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones, marking one of the most significant reimaginings in the park’s history.
