Macaulay Culkin Shares Plot Synopsis for New ‘Home Alone’ Movie
The Home Alone series features two of the most iconic Christmas movies of all time. The other four sequels, however, leave a lot to be desired. Home Alone 3 took the franchise into the low-budget-look territory, Home Alone 4 had the audacity to recast Kevin and the rest of the McCallisters, Home Alone: The Holiday Heist is about as memorable as it sounds, and the less said about the downright awful Home Sweet Home Alone, the better.
Will we get another sequel at some point in the future? Now that Disney owns the franchise, it’s more than likely. And you can also bet your bottom dollar that it will be as bad as the last four. But what if we got a sequel to those first two films, Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, with Macaulay Culkin returning as Kevin McCallister?

That’s exactly what the 45-year-old actor suggested recently, sharing his pitch for a potential “true” sequel to the original classic. During a recent stop on his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” tour (per Variety), he admitted that he “wouldn’t be completely allergic” to reprising his role as the booby-trap-making McCallister child, although he stressed that “it would have to be just right”. Well, his pitch alone sounds intriguing.
“I kind of had this idea,” Culkin said. “I’m [Kevin] either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me.”
He said that “the house is some sort of metaphor” for the relationship between Kevin and his son, and that his character has to “get let back into son’s heart.” He added, “That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have. I’m not completely allergic to it, the right thing.”

While the idea adopts the classic Christmas movie trope of an absent, workaholic dad — it served the likes of The Santa Clause with Tim Allen and Jingle All The Way starring Arnold Schwarzenegger pretty well.
On the other hand, it’s also a unique twist as it technically replaces the Wet Bandits (known as the Sticky Bandits in Home Alone 2), Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern) with Kevin himself. The only real downside is that it feels far too similar to the plot of Home Sweet Home Alone, which pits Rob Delaney and Ellie Kemper’s characters against young Max (Archie Yates), who’s actually the real villain — and thief — of the 2021 sequel.
With all that said, we’d love to see Culkin play Kevin in a true Home Alone sequel. After all, it was delightful to see him appear as the beloved character the 2018 Google Assistant commercial that re-created iconic Home Alone scenes, and in DRYVRS, the viral YouTube shorts where an older Kevin reflects on his chaotic childhood, and most recently, in the Home But Not Alone ads — which include Granddaughter Marley, Groceries, Your Turn, and The Delivery — a holiday campaign from in-home care provider Home Instead.
The Home Alone movies are now streaming on Disney+.
