June 30 Is a Special Date for Magic Kingdom–Here’s Why

After a long five-year wait, one small part of Disney World’s 2020 closure is finally over. The Prairie Outpost in Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland is officially reopening on June 30—but this time, it’s trading snacks and candy for headwear and hats.

The store, which closed along with the rest of the resort during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, will now welcome guests looking for stylish accessories. According to Disney, “Become a fashion pioneer when you shop for wide-brimmed hats, classic fedoras, customized headwear, and more at this stylish shop in Frontierland.”

While this reopening marks a celebratory moment, big changes are just around the corner for the rest of Frontierland. On July 7, Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America will permanently close at Magic Kingdom. These iconic spots are stepping aside to make room for Piston Peak National Park, a brand-new themed land based on Pixar’s Cars franchise. Although Disney hasn’t revealed a full attraction lineup yet, they’ve confirmed the area will feature at least two rides aimed at families and older guests.

And that’s not the only construction in the works. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad—a key part of Frontierland—is currently closed and will remain unavailable until sometime next year. Meanwhile, the larger reimagining of Frontierland continues with the upcoming Beyond Big Thunder project, which is expected to introduce Disney Villains into the park’s ever-expanding footprint.

The changes are part of a broader transformation sweeping across Walt Disney World. Over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, work has begun to redesign the former DinoLand U.S.A., signaling the company’s larger push to reimagine classic areas with new stories and characters.

So while some guests are choosing to delay their trips until more updates are complete, others are heading to the parks now to catch the final days of classic attractions—and to celebrate the return of a Frontierland favorite.

He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his… More »
