It’s Official: Tomorrowland Area Closed at Magic Kingdom Until 2026

As of Monday, August 4, 2025, Magic Kingdom Park has officially closed one of its iconic Tomorrowland attractions for a major update. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, an interactive ride that has been part of the original Central Florida Disney park since 1998, is now closed indefinitely, with plans to reopen in 2026.

In March 2025, Walt Disney World Resort revealed that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin would undergo a months-long refurbishment to modernize the ride. The upcoming updates include new interactive ride vehicles, improved handheld blasters with different laser colors for each guest, and an updated ride photo. Thanks to the addition of screens inside the new ride vehicles, guests will also be able to track their scores live.

The biggest addition to the attraction will be a new scene starring Buddy, a robot character created by Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios. This animatronic will provide a tutorial on how to use the blasters and introduce guests to Star Command.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has been replicated at Disney parks around the world, including Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland, Shanghai Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris. However, as newer Toy Story (1995) themed attractions, like Toy Story Mania! and Slinky Dog Dash, gained popularity, Walt Disney World Resort’s version of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin began to show signs of age. With laser blasters that were tough to use and an outdated ride photo, Disney Parks fans had been calling for an upgrade.

Walt Disney World Resort has confirmed that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will remain closed until sometime in 2026. An exact reopening date has not been announced.
