Today was a big day for Walt Disney World! With the phased reopening announcement beginning July 11 (Magic Kingdom and Disney’s Animal Kingdom) and July 15 (EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios), several people are wondering why Disney decided to wait to reopen a month after other Orlando theme parks reopen, such as Universal and SeaWorld. Bob Chapek, CEO of Disney, joined CNBC’s Julia Boorstin to discuss the reopening.
Chapek shared he wants Walt Disney World to continue to be a quintessential Disney experience. They want to do the reopening in a responsible way to continue making life long memories for their guests.

He said they will not set a capacity number for the reopening because there is no government guidance and they don’t expect to receive any. They will however follow the CDC calculation with the 6 feet social distancing.
Chapek said the focus of the reopen is not so much to make money, but to cover costs while slowly but surely making baby steps to open in a responsible way.
He said there are encouraging data points showing the Disney demand is ready to get back to some magic! There is still a tremendous number of resort reservations. Shanghai and Disney Springs reopenings have also shown tremendous response.
Shanghai is living within the 3 feet guidelines currently assigned by China. This allows 20,000 guests in the park per day. China guests have been spectacular following the guidelines, and Chapek expects the same to happen at Walt Disney World.
