As Hurricane Milton approaches the Florida coast, Disney World is taking steps to ensure guest safety and satisfaction by offering a waiver on cancellation and change fees.

This policy, which applies to reservations for October 6 through October 12, 2024, allows guests with upcoming vacations to modify or cancel their bookings without penalty, as long as their reservations were made directly with Disney Destinations, LLC or The Walt Disney Travel Company.

Guests can manage most room-only and vacation package reservations online, with the ability to shift travel dates or cancel without fees. However, packages involving third-party providers, such as airlines or travel protection, require assistance by phone. The waiver may not apply to certain special events, which may still carry restrictions.

At present, Disney World remains open, and in an official statement, the resort assured guests: “Walt Disney World Resort is currently operating under normal conditions. We are closely monitoring the path of the projected storm as we continue to prioritize the safety of our Guests and Cast Members.”

However, Disney has blocked new hotel and park reservations for October 9, the anticipated day when Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall.

With meteorologists predicting that Milton could intensify into a Category 3 storm, the company’s preemptive measures come as no surprise. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for several counties, including Orange County, where Disney World is located. As a result, Disney’s waiver of cancellation fees and suspension of new bookings may be a sign that closures could be on the horizon.

In the past, Disney World has implemented similar measures for other hurricanes, such as Matthew, Irma, and Ian. The resort also has a history of employing “ride-out crews,” which consist of cast members who stay on-site during the storm to ensure that operations can resume quickly once the weather clears.

For guests who remain at the resorts, Disney often provides additional entertainment options and enhanced communication about the storm’s progress.

With Hurricane Milton’s arrival expected mid-week, Disney is taking every precaution to ensure the safety of both its guests and staff. For those who need to adjust their travel plans, Disney’s waiver of fees provides a hassle-free way to make changes during this unpredictable time.

While the parks are currently operating normally, guests are encouraged to stay informed and keep an eye on Disney’s official weather page for any updates that may arise.
