‘Harry Potter’ Offerings Resume at Universal After Shutdown

Universal has quietly reopened two Harry Potter experiences, signaling a continued focus on smaller-scale additions within its global theme park portfolio.

In recent years, immersive lands have become the industry standard, with major operators investing heavily in environments that extend beyond traditional rides. The shift has placed greater emphasis on atmosphere, interactivity, and repeatable guest experiences.

Few developments have influenced that model more than the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. What began as a single land has since grown into a multi-park, multi-continent franchise that continues to evolve.

Universal’s relationship with Harry Potter dates back more than a decade, beginning with a single, ambitious expansion that reshaped the theme park industry. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade opened at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in 2010, anchored by Hogwarts Castle and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

The land proved an immediate success and helped redefine expectations for themed entertainment. Its detailed design and narrative cohesion set a new benchmark, influencing how both Universal and its competitors approached future expansions.

Universal expanded the concept in 2014 with Diagon Alley at Universal Studios Florida. Connected to Hogsmeade via the Hogwarts Express, the addition created a unified, story-driven experience across multiple parks.

The Wizarding World has since expanded internationally, with locations in Hollywood, Beijing, and beyond. Each version retains familiar settings while incorporating localized differences, ensuring a degree of variation across markets.

That evolution continued in 2025 with the opening of Universal’s Epic Universe, which introduced a Ministry of Magic land in Orlando. The area blends elements from the original films with concepts tied to the Fantastic Beasts series.

Two ‘Harry Potter’ Experiences Resume Operations

Despite the scale of these expansions, smaller offerings remain part of the overall strategy. Two Harry Potter experiences have now returned following a temporary closure.

As of March 20, guests can once again visit Meet the Hogsmeade Magical Creatures and Hippogriff Magical Lesson.

Both were originally introduced as part of a “Magical Creatures Encounter” offering. They allow guests to interact with creatures such as a Hippogriff, a Niffler, and a baby dragon — features not typically found in other versions of the land.

The experiences had been closed for approximately two months during colder seasonal conditions. Their return suggests they may now operate on a limited or seasonal basis rather than year-round.

At one point, some guests believed the closures were permanent. The reopening appears to clarify their ongoing role within the park’s lineup.

Universal describes the encounters as follows: “The vibrant village of Hogsmeade has recently become even livelier. Why? Because of the little magical creatures appear here and there!”

“The one rummaging through the mail in the cart in front of the Owl Post is a ‘Niffler’ that loves shiny, sparkling treasures. In the plaza next to Hogsmeade station a creature trader is secretly carrying a ‘baby dragon’ just hatched from an egg.”

“Mewing in front of Zonko’s ‘mischief store’ is… Fluffy pink Pygmy Puffs! All of them are smart and cute, but be careful, as they can be unpredictable. Listen carefully to the wizards and take pictures with them.”

Franchise Growth Continues

The reopening comes as Universal continues to expand its Harry Potter footprint across multiple markets.

Early concept art for the planned Universal United Kingdom Resort did not prominently feature the franchise. More recent reports suggest that Harry Potter attractions are now expected to be included.

Elsewhere, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi has begun work on a Harry Potter expansion, adding to the brand’s presence in the region.

Specific timelines for both projects remain unclear.

A brand-new Harry Potter flagship store is also set to open in London later this year, joining existing stores in the likes of Chicago and New York.
