Universal Orlando Resort’s Islands of Adventure is a must-visit for theme park enthusiasts, offering everything from high-speed roller coasters to family-friendly attractions.
Among its most popular sections is Toon Lagoon, a land designed for guests who don’t mind getting soaked. However, if you were planning to take a rafting trip through Popeye’s world, you’ll need to adjust your itinerary.
Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges Closed for Refurbishment
Universal has officially closed Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges for its annual maintenance, blocking off access to the ride and surrounding areas. The closure is expected to last through March 15, 2025, during which time crews will perform regular upkeep and any necessary repairs.
This isn’t an unexpected move, as the ride typically goes down for refurbishment around the same time each year. Water rides, in particular, require frequent maintenance due to the constant exposure to moisture, which can take a toll on mechanical systems and ride structures. Guests visiting before mid-March will have to look elsewhere for a way to cool off, though Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls remains open for those looking to get soaked.
What Is Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges?
The attraction, which opened with Islands of Adventure in 1999, is a river rapids ride themed to the classic Popeye the Sailor cartoons. The storyline sees guests helping Popeye rescue Olive Oyl from the clutches of Bluto while navigating a chaotic whitewater adventure. Riders can expect a completely drenching experience, as the raft encounters waves, waterfalls, and surprise water jets along the way.
The closure also impacts Me Ship, The Olive, a nearby interactive water play area. While the Universal Orlando Resort app does not list it as officially closed, access is currently blocked by construction walls.
When Will the Ride Return?
Universal has scheduled the reopening for March 15, 2025, though refurbishments can sometimes be extended if additional work is needed. Until then, guests will have to enjoy Toon Lagoon’s other wet attractions or stick to the drier rides throughout the park.
We’ll keep an eye on any updates regarding the ride’s reopening. In the meantime, are you disappointed about the closure, or do you usually skip this attraction? Let us know your thoughts!
