Guests Stuck After Major Disney World Coaster Shuts Down Mid-Ride

Walt Disney World’s thrilling Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind recently had an unexpected moment in the spotlight—literally. A TikTok video shared by user Lauren Chavez (@lchavez1121) captured the attraction with the lights fully on, revealing a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse of the typically immersive Marvel-themed coaster.

The footage, taken during an apparent ride stoppage, showed guests seated in the ride vehicles, surrounded by dim, blank walls, exposed flooring, and idle screens. While no dialogue was featured in the clip, viewer reactions in the comments section came swiftly—and critically. Some compared the revealed space to a mega church stage, with comments like:

“Not gonna lie it feels like backstage at a mega church,” and “You mean I’m embarrassing myself in a megachurch.”

Others went further, criticizing the attraction’s upkeep. One viewer wrote:

“Shows just how lazy Imagineering got these past couple years,” while another added: “The trains and everything are so dusty and dirty when you see them in the light. I was stuck at this spot.”

Cosmic Rewind is no stranger to operational pauses. In fact, just last month, EPCOT Vice President Matt Simon issued a public apology after another incident temporarily suspended the ride. In a note shared with park guests, Simon stated:

“On behalf of the entire team at EPCOT, I’d like to apologize that Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is currently unavailable. Our Cast Members are working diligently to get the attraction up and running again, and we are sorry you are not able to experience this attraction at this time.”

“I hope you will enjoy some of our other attractions during your experience in the park today,” he added.

Despite its intermittent issues, Cosmic Rewind remains one of EPCOT’s most sought-after rides, drawing guests with its iconic soundtrack featuring tracks like “September” and “One Way Or Another,” as well as its high-speed rotating coaster design that brings the Guardians of the Galaxy right into the action. Guests often line up for hours just to take a spin through the cosmos.

The ride’s reliability—or lack thereof—has become part of the conversation among frequent EPCOT visitors, and these “lights-on” moments, while uncommon, continue to spark conversation across social media platforms.

Meanwhile, another EPCOT favorite is preparing for its grand return. Beginning July 22, Test Track will reopen with refreshed theming and design updates following its extended refurbishment. This update will impact the park’s Lightning Lane lineup, placing Test Track in the upper-tier category alongside Frozen Ever After and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, while Soarin’ Around the World drops into the lower tier.

For those who have experienced a ride pause or seen behind-the-scenes views like this, moments like these are a reminder that even the most advanced attractions can have their hiccups. Hopefully, the guests caught mid-ride got to enjoy a full, cosmic experience once the lights dimmed and the adventure resumed.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his… More »
