We have eaten at Thunder Falls Terrace. We have sat outside with rotisserie chicken watching boats full of screaming guests hit the final drop on Jurassic Park River Adventure. It is exactly as enjoyable as it sounds. The outdoor seating above the splash zone was one of those unexpected theme park dining pleasures, the kind where the attraction becomes part of the meal.
That experience is permanently over as of today.
Universal confirmed that Thunder Falls Terrace at Islands of Adventure has closed for good. This is not a temporary refurbishment. The location is being completely transformed into an all-new dining concept that will open as the new signature full-service restaurant for Islands of Adventure in 2027. Whatever the new restaurant becomes, it will not be a quick-service rotisserie chicken spot overlooking the river. The whole thing is changing.
And it is not happening in isolation. The Jurassic Park land at Universal right now is one of the most actively transforming sections of any major theme park in the country, with multiple projects running simultaneously and an aerial photography situation that has the parks community paying close attention.

The Thunder Falls News and Why 2027 Is the Key Number
Universal is not being especially chatty about the details of the new restaurant. No name, no theme, no menu hints, no design direction. What has been confirmed is the closure, the 2027 opening timeline, and the designation as the park’s new signature full-service restaurant.
That last part is where things get interesting from a dining perspective.
Mythos Restaurant is currently the signature full-service dining option at Islands of Adventure. Mythos has been there since the park opened and has earned genuine acclaim, winning best theme park restaurant awards over the years. It is a real restaurant by any standard. It is also located in The Lost Continent, which Universal is actively demolishing and redeveloping as both Poseidon’s Fury and The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad theater come down around it. Mythos is expected to close in 2027 as that redevelopment moves forward.
Universal has not officially connected those two timelines. But the math is not hard. The park’s existing full-service anchor is closing in 2027. A new full-service anchor is opening in 2027. The new one is in Jurassic Park. The guest who wants a proper sit-down meal at Islands of Adventure will have somewhere to go. The address changes. The function continues.
We are genuinely curious about what the concept becomes. Jurassic Park as a dining theme has real potential, and a full-service restaurant with that setting and presumably that budget could be something special.
Where to Eat in Jurassic Park While All This Is Happening
Thunder Falls is gone. River Adventure is closed until November 20. The full picture of what is available in the Jurassic Park land right now is The Burger Digs and Pizza Predattoria.
They are there. They are open. They are not Thunder Falls Terrace, particularly if you were coming specifically for the rotisserie chicken or the outdoor river seating. But if you are in the land and you need food, that is where you go.
The River Adventure Construction Update Is Actually Exciting
The attraction closed in January. It is scheduled to return November 20, 2026. And based on what the photos show, the project is tracking well with some genuinely exciting discoveries.
The biggest one: Universal is not replacing Jurassic Park (1993) with Jurassic World. When Universal Studios Hollywood refurbished its version of the ride, the classic Ultrasaur opening sequence was swapped out for a massive Mosasaurus screen scene from the newer films. A lot of Islands of Adventure fans were worried the same thing would happen here. The latest aerial photos strongly suggest it is not. The original opening storyline appears intact.
What is changing is the Ultrasaur itself. The familiar exterior has been removed, exposing the internal mechanical framework, and a new white metal neck armature has been installed. If you have ridden River Adventure in the last several years you know that the opening Ultrasaur had become a bit of a joke among regulars for its limited movement, looking more like a dinosaur with a neck injury than a living creature. Universal appears to be fixing that specifically, rebuilding the figure to actually move the way it should.
The baby Stegosaurus is also getting work, with facial covering removed to allow improvements to its moving components. The adult Stegosaurus has temporarily relocated backstage, presumably for similar attention.
The most encouraging development in the photos is a partial water test visible in sections of the waterway. Water testing is typically a later-stage milestone in a refurbishment project. Seeing it in July with a November 20 return date suggests the project is moving through its phases on schedule. Boats are also staged on the attraction and backstage, pointing to continued system testing over the coming months.
What is happening inside the main show building remains unknown. Universal has not specified what guests should expect in those enclosed sections beyond describing the closure as planned maintenance.
The Jurassic Park Land in 2027 Versus the Jurassic Park Land Today
Here is the version of the Jurassic Park land you can expect when everything currently in progress reaches the other side.
River Adventure returns in November with rebuilt animatronics, improved movement, refreshed systems, and the original Jurassic Park story intact. Thunder Falls Terrace transforms into a new signature full-service restaurant sometime in 2027. The land that has been operating at reduced capacity for most of 2026 becomes a more complete version of itself than it has been in years.
Right now, the land is an active construction zone with its anchor attraction closed and its most prominent restaurant gone. The atmosphere is still there because Jurassic Park’s architecture and sound design are deeply embedded in the land. But the two biggest reasons guests specifically make a stop in that section of the park are both temporarily unavailable.
