Two Days Before Its Closure, Guests Lament the Fall of Disney’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Ride
As Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! nears closure, guests are once again complaining about the state of the thrill ride.
Located at Disney California Adventure Park, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is a high-octane drop ride that throws guests into the chaotic world of Marvel’s misfit heroes.
Replacing the iconic Twilight Zone Tower of Terror (RIP) in 2017, the attraction reimagines the former haunted hotel as the Collector’s fortress — a neon-lit, alien stronghold packed with Easter eggs from across the Marvel universe.
The story follows Rocket Raccoon as he hatches a plan to rescue his fellow Guardians, sending guests on a wild escape mission filled with sudden drops and classic rock tracks like “Born to Be Wild” and “I Want You Back.”
With six randomized ride sequences, no two experiences are the same, keeping the adrenaline high and the surprises constant. It’s a breakneck blend of Marvel storytelling and theme park thrills, cementing itself as a must-ride for fans and daredevils alike – but only when you can get on the actual ride.
Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! Faces Recurrent Issues
While every ride requires maintenance at one point or another, the upcoming closure for Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! – slated to begin on Monday – could not come soon enough judging by recent complaints from Disneyland guests.
As wait times hit a high of 220 minutes (yes, nearly four hours) on March 7, guests lamented the current state of the Avengers Campus attraction on Reddit.
“They’ve been having trouble with Guardians for a long time now – since early last year,” said one user. “It’s been operating very sporadically.”
They went on to explain that if Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! operates with fewer loading zones than usual, the ride’s throughput slows dramatically. This often forces the standby line to close or stretch on to surprising lengths, as was the case yesterday.
In this case, it’s down to two gantries, but the standby line remains open, so the posted 3-hour and 40-minute wait could be accurate. Even Lightning Lane waits can stretch past an hour when capacity is this low.
Guests have also experienced breakdowns of the ride’s Rocket Raccoon animatronic during the pre-show. “The past two times I went I got the video version of Rocket explaining the ride,” wrote one user. “Is the animatronic version not running anymore? Or is it also another issue?”
What Happens Next For The Ride?
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard guests complain about the ride’s issues. As one guest wrote on Reddit in January, “I was there last weekend and they only had one of the shafts working. Even with Lightning Lane it took an hour to get on.”
With so many recurrent problems, guests have noted that they’re actually wary of joining the line for Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! as of late.
Notably, the ride hasn’t closed down for a proper refurbishment since it first opened back in 2017. That means it’s been eight long years since Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! received some thorough TLC (and it shows).
With the upcoming refurbishment, there’s hope that Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! returns running smoother than ever. According to the Disneyland Resort website, the ride is set to reopen on March 21, 2025. Here’s to a stronger, more reliable experience when it blasts back into action.
