Saddle Up! Why a Day at Fort Wilderness is Disney’s Best Kept Secret

When most people think of a Walt Disney World vacation, their mind jumps straight to the parks. But sometimes, the best memories come from slowing down and exploring the incredible Disney Resorts themselves.

One of the most unique spots to do just that is Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, a rustic retreat that blends the magic of Disney with the charm of the great outdoors.

If you’re looking for a day away from long lines and attractions, Fort Wilderness offers plenty of activities for families, couples, and even solo adventurers.

Start the Morning with Horseback Riding

Kick off your day with a little frontier spirit by heading to the Tri-Circle-D Ranch, where you can enjoy guided horseback riding through scenic woodland trails. It’s a peaceful way to take in the natural beauty of the resort and a great option for anyone wanting something active but relaxing. Pony rides are also available for younger cowboys and cowgirls.

Relax or Explore in the Afternoon

After your ride, you might cool off at one of the resort’s pools or rent a bike, kayak, or canoe to explore Fort Wilderness at your own pace. If you prefer something less physical, consider a wagon ride around the grounds—it’s a nostalgic way to see the resort’s sprawling trails.

You can also catch the ferry to Magic Kingdom for a quick park visit and return later in the day.

Evening Entertainment: Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue

No Fort Wilderness day is complete without dinner at the legendary Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue. This high-energy dinner show serves up endless fried chicken, ribs, cornbread, and strawberry shortcake while performers keep the audience laughing, clapping, and singing along. It’s one of Disney World’s longest-running and most beloved shows for a reason.

Cap It Off with the Chip ‘n’ Dale Campfire Sing-Along

After dinner, grab your marshmallows (or s’mores kits sold onsite) and head to the Chip ‘n’ Dale Campfire Sing-Along.

This nightly gathering combines campfire fun with character meet-and-greets, live music, and plenty of silly songs. Once the sun sets, the event rolls right into an outdoor Disney movie under the stars—a cozy, magical way to end your day.

Why Fort Wilderness?

Fort Wilderness is more than just a place to sleep—it’s an entire experience. With horseback riding, unique dining, campfire fun, and plenty of recreational options, you could spend a full day here without stepping foot in a theme park.

Whether you’re camping in a tent, staying in a cabin, or just visiting for the day, Fort Wilderness lets you enjoy the slower side of Disney magic.
