Disney World Enacts Immediate Closure of EPCOT Theme Park Area

The World Discovery Liquid Layer Splash Pad at EPCOT closed indefinitely on March 3 with all interactive water features shut down and stanchions blocking guest access.

On Tuesday, WDWNT reported that the splash pad has experienced operational difficulties since at least mid-February. Cooling misters behind the attraction continue functioning normally, spraying water at Walt Disney World Resort guests. The outlet posted this photo on Facebook showing the roped-off play area:

Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t publicly announced the splash pad closure or provided a reopening timeline. The sudden shutdown could stem from repeated cold weather fronts in Central Florida, technical issues, or unpublicized maintenance work.

The splash pad’s most recent refurbishment wrapped in November 2023, suggesting the area may be due for another major maintenance effort.

The closure comes one day before EPCOT’s International Flower & Garden Festival begins on March 4. Walt Disney World Resort typically sees heavy crowds during the annual event, particularly when it coincides with spring break at schools and universities nationwide.

Families with young children often rely on the splash pad as a cooling break during warm Florida days, exploring EPCOT. The closure eliminates that option as temperatures rise and festival crowds pack the theme park.

Misters Still Operating

The functioning cooling misters behind the splash pad indicate selective system shutdown rather than complete water infrastructure failure. If water delivery systems were entirely compromised, the misters would likely be offline as well.

The partial operation suggests that Walt Disney World Resort isolated specific splash pad components experiencing problems while maintaining other water features in the World Discovery area.
