There are celebrity attractions, and then there is Dollywood.
For nearly 40 years, Dolly Parton’s name has been attached to the Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, theme park in a way that goes far beyond branding. Her childhood is represented there. Her music is performed there. Her former tour bus is on display. Her family history and Appalachian roots are part of the guest experience.
So when news broke that Dolly Parton had died at 80, there was an obvious question hanging over Dollywood: What happens to the park now?
Dollywood has answered that question.
The theme park has released an emotional statement following Parton’s death, mourning the loss of its longtime co-owner and namesake while making it clear that the park will continue operating. In fact, Dollywood says it will open Wednesday, honoring Parton’s wishes for the destination she helped create.
For longtime fans, that first day without Dolly is likely to be an emotional one.
Dollywood Shares Heartbreaking Message
Dollywood referred to Parton as its “beloved Dreamer-in-Chief” while addressing her death on social media.
“With heavy hearts, the Dollywood family mourns the passing of our beloved Dreamer-in-Chief, Dolly Parton,” the park said.
The statement continued by recognizing the impact Parton had on people around the world.
“Everyone at Dollywood shares the sorrow of countless people around the world touched by Dolly’s warmth, wisdom and generous spirit.”
But Dollywood also highlighted something particularly important about Parton’s vision for the park.
According to the theme park, Dolly wanted Dollywood to remain “a place of joy, hope and togetherness.”
She wanted guests to remember her through laughter, music, and shared experiences rather than sadness alone.
That is exactly what Dollywood plans to do.
The park says it will open Wednesday because that is what Dolly wanted.
“The Show Must Go On”
Eugene Naughton, President of Dollywood Parks & Resorts, shared his own tribute to Parton.
“The greatest privilege of my life has been helping Dolly bring her dreams to life at Dollywood,” Naughton said.
He described Parton’s heart as being “as vast as the mountains she cherished” and praised the compassion she showed throughout her life.
“She inspired generations to dream boldly and love deeply,” he said.
Naughton added that Dollywood is committed to preserving Parton’s influence.
“Her legacy will continue to shine in every melody sung, every smile shared and every dream kindled within these gates.”
Then came perhaps the most fitting line in the entire statement.
“In her spirit, Dollywood will be open Wednesday as Dolly wanted, always reminding everyone with her signature sparkle — ‘the show must go on.'”
For a theme park that has spent decades celebrating Parton’s life, it is difficult to imagine a more appropriate response.

Dolly’s Fingerprints Are Everywhere
Parton became a co-owner of Dollywood with Herschend in 1986, and her influence helped shape the park into what it is today.
Unlike a celebrity who simply licenses a name to an attraction, Parton became part of the park’s identity.
Visitors can explore Dolly’s Tennessee Mountain Home, a recreation of her childhood home on Locust Ridge. The Dolly Parton Experience features several exhibits devoted to her life, including Songteller, Behind the Seams, and Precious Memories.
Her former tour bus is also part of the attraction.
Then there is Heartsong, a multisensory experience inspired by Parton’s connection to the Smoky Mountains.
DreamSong has also featured members of Parton’s family performing her music.
That’s why her passing changes the feeling of a Dollywood vacation in a way that would be difficult to replicate at another theme park.
The person being celebrated is no longer simply a celebrity from another generation.
She is now part of the park’s permanent history.
Dolly Had Already Been Stepping Away From the Spotlight
Parton’s health had become a growing concern in recent months, and Dollywood fans had already noticed her reduced presence.
Earlier this month, she was scheduled to attend the opening celebration for NightFlight Expedition, one of Dollywood’s newest major attractions.
She didn’t make it.
Instead, Parton appeared through a prerecorded video after her doctor told her not to travel.
“I get a little dizzy and I get dehydrated,” Parton explained.
She joked that her doctor had “clipped my wings” and ordered her to stay home.
NightFlight Expedition opened to guests on August 19, making Parton’s absence particularly noticeable.
Her health struggles had also affected other appearances and plans.
Parton recently told PEOPLE that she was going through “some hard times with my health.” She explained that she had been dealing with health issues she had previously neglected while caring for her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, who died in March 2025.
Despite those difficulties, Parton continued working.
“Even though I’m still healin’, I’m still workin’,” she said.
She had also canceled a planned Las Vegas residency and missed several major appearances while undergoing medical treatment and recovery.
So, Is Dollywood Closing?
No.
There is no indication that Dolly Parton’s death will result in Dollywood shutting down.
The park is operated through its partnership with Herschend and has developed into a major theme park destination independent of Parton’s day-to-day involvement.
Her influence, however, isn’t going anywhere.
If anything, the attractions dedicated to her life could become even more significant.
The Dolly Parton Experience may be one of the most important places for visitors to learn about her legacy. Dolly’s Tennessee Mountain Home could also take on new meaning, particularly for fans who want to connect with the humble beginnings behind her extraordinary career.
And then there is the music.
Guests will continue hearing Parton’s songs throughout the park, surrounded by the mountains that inspired so much of her work.

If you already have a Dollywood vacation planned, there is no reason to cancel simply because of Parton’s death.
The park intends to operate normally.
But if you’ve visited before, don’t be surprised if the atmosphere feels a little different.
