Disney World Theme Park Closed Five Days in a Row, Reopening Uncertain

Freezing temperatures across Central Florida have forced Walt Disney World Resort to shutter one of its theme parks for five consecutive days. Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park has extended its closure until Monday, as brutal cold weather makes operating water attractions dangerous and impractical, leaving guests wondering if the planned weekend reopening will actually take place.

Walt Disney World Resort initially announced over the weekend that Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park would close Monday, January 12, through Wednesday, January 14, with Thursday, January 15, marked as the reopening date.

Unfortunately, meteorological data showed freezing temperatures would persist far longer than originally anticipated, extending well into the weekend. Walt Disney World Resort responded by updating the water park’s closure status on its website, adding two additional days to the shutdown.

The coldest air of the season arrives late week and lasts into next week. Here’s the hour by hour wind chills. Sure, it’s cold Friday morning… but notice how chilly it is during the day (Thursday and Friday). Thursday turns gusty early, by dinner time it’s already cold. And Friday feels like the 40s & 50s most of the day. #cold #florida

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is now closed from Monday, January 12, through Friday, January 16—five straight days without operations.

Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park escaped the weather-related shutdown entirely, as it was already closed for its scheduled seasonal refurbishment.

Major Reconstruction Awaits During Next Typhoon Lagoon Closure

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park will face another extended closure, beginning February 15, 2026, when Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park reopens, and operations will shift to an alternating schedule. The February closure isn’t weather-related; it’s just the water park’s planned seasonal refurbishment window.

Construction permits reveal Disney intends to rebuild the Humunga Kowabunga waterslide during the maintenance period. The reconstruction follows a lawsuit from a guest who claimed she suffered “severe and permanent” injuries after experiencing a “painful wedgie” on the attraction. The case was recently dismissed, but Disney is moving forward with the waterslide overhaul regardless.

Summer Operations Confirmed

Despite the current uncertainty, Walt Disney World Resort has confirmed both water parks will operate simultaneously during peak summer months. Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park will both welcome guests from May 26, 2026, through September 8, 2026.

Disney Resort hotel guests staying during that summer window will receive complimentary water park admission on their check-in day—a perk designed to encourage guests to experience both facilities during the overlapping operational period.
