Disney’s Most Intense Ride Is a Claustrophobe’s Worst Nightmare

Is this the most intense ride at a Disney theme park?

A colorful, futuristic theme park sign at Disney World reads "Mission: SPACE." The sign features a stylized spaceship flying above the text, with a large depiction of Earth in the background, all against a vibrant sky with a glowing sunset.

At Mission: SPACE, the adventure begins long before the ride itself. Guests are greeted by a captivating entrance adorned with space-themed decor, setting the tone for an unforgettable experience. Upon arrival, they can admire a giant globe of Earth with a rocket soaring around it and impressive models of Mars and Jupiter. As one steps into the building, the queue transports them into a space training center, complete with props from the movie “Mission to Mars” and replicas of NASA equipment. The atmosphere is buzzing with excitement as visitors prepare for their journey.

As they move deeper into the center, guests are treated to an introductory video featuring the Capsule Communicator (Capcom), portrayed by the talented Gina Torres. This engaging presentation helps familiarize riders with what they can expect during their mission, creating an immersive environment that enhances the overall experience. The anticipation mounts as they learn about the crucial roles they will take on during their ride.

One of the first decisions guests face is choosing between the two mission experiences offered: the Orange Mission and the Green Mission.

The Orange Mission is a more intense simulation, taking riders on a thrilling journey to Mars. Participants will be assigned one of four positions on the crew: navigator, pilot, commander, or engineer. They will engage in exciting tasks and feel the sensations of liftoff, including a gravity assist by slingshotting around the moon.
However, things take an unexpected turn when obstacles arise, and guests must navigate a series of challenges with the help of Capcom to ensure a successful landing on the red planet.

For those who prefer a gentler ride or are prone to motion sickness, the Green Mission offers a calm orbit around Earth. Similar to its counterpart, participants will take on various roles and follow along with the journey through a viewscreen, but without the intense g-forces or spinning sensations. Here, the focus is on a beautiful view of Earth as they maneuver through a thunderstorm during re-entry.

Essential Information for Visitors

For those planning a visit to Mission: SPACE, it is located in the World Discovery section of EPCOT, conveniently positioned between Cosmic Rewind and Test Track. The ride itself lasts approximately 4-5 minutes, but the total experience, including the preshow, takes about 15 minutes.

Riders should keep in mind several access restrictions: guests must be at least 40″ tall for the Green Mission and 44″ tall for the Orange Mission. Additionally, those with any history of motion sickness or discomfort in close spaces should exercise caution. The seating arrangements may also limit participants of certain body types from enjoying the ride.

To make the most of their day, visitors are encouraged to arrive early in the morning or later in the evening when wait times are typically shorter.

When at Disney world, Luke will probably be found eating with his favorite animatronic, Sonny Eclipse at Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe. When not at Disney World, Luke will probably be found defending Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe to people who claim "there are better restaurants"
