When Disney California Adventure Park opened in 2001 at Disneyland Resort, it whisked guests back to the Golden Age of California, showcasing the glamour of Hollywood, the lively atmosphere of the boardwalk, thrilling attractions, and delicious food. However, the park struggled to capture the same enchanting magic that visitors had come to expect from Disney.
Over the years, DCA has undergone multiple transformations to attract more guests. Notable changes include the 2018 reimagining of Paradise Pier into Pixar Pier and the 2021 debut of Avengers Campus, which replaced Bug’s Land.

The Red Car Trolley, an emblematic attraction at Disney California Adventure (DCA), opened in 2012 as part of a significant renovation aimed at revitalizing the park’s image. Modeled after the Pacific Electric Railway trolleys, which once traversed Los Angeles, the trolley was designed to evoke nostalgia and a sense of place.
Over the years, the Red Car Trolley has been significant in enhancing the guest experience, allowing visitors to take in the ambiance of Buena Vista Street and Hollywood Land.
In a significant announcement, Disney officials confirmed that the last operational day for the Red Car Trolley will be February 8, 2025. This date also coincides with the park’s 24th anniversary, marking the end of an era for both the attraction and the park itself. The closure is widely regarded as permanent, necessitated by the forthcoming construction related to the expansion of the Avengers Campus.
As Disney prepares for this transformation, the removal of the trolley’s infrastructure, including its barn for parking and maintenance, seems imminent. The news of the Red Car Trolley closing has evoked a sense of sadness among longtime visitors and fans, as it represents not just a beloved ride but a nostalgic piece of Disney California Adventure’s identity.

The expansion of Avengers Campus, confirmed at D23 2023, includes the introduction of two major attractions — Stark Flight Lab and Avengers Infinity Defense. Construction for the Avengers Campus expansion is expected to begin in early 2025, with potential delays pushing the completion of new attractions into 2026. Disney has indicated that this expansion aims to double the size of the current Marvel-themed land, resulting in substantial changes to DCA’s layout.
On a positive note, the magic of the Red Car Trolley will live on, even after it stops running. While it won’t be making its usual rounds through the park, the trolley will remain parked at the Buena Vista Street station. Guests will still be able to hop aboard for photos, and you might even spot some familiar characters making a special appearance on the trolley!
