Disneyland Monorail Now Closed, Families Forced To Seek Alternate Transportation

The Disneyland Resort Monorail system closed on Monday, March 30, leaving families without the 2.5-mile tram connection between Downtown Disney District and Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park.

Disneyland Resort announced the indefinite closure in February, but still hasn’t provided a reopening date for the 66-year-old highway in the sky.

The Disneyland Resort Monorail opened in June 1959. As a lifelong train fan, Walt Disney envisioned the tram system as the future of public transportation. Although it didn’t become the next big thing, the Monorail became a staple of Disney parks around the world, including Walt Disney World Resort and Tokyo Disney Resort.

The original Monorail has received several updates throughout the years, most significantly a rerouting for the opening of Disney California Adventure Park in 2001. The tram system now transports guests 2.5 miles between the Downtown Disney District station and Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park.

Before announcing the refurbishment in February, Disneyland Resort filed construction permits revealing plans to update electrical systems and reinforce support pillars for the Monorail. Southern California Disney Park guests may not notice changes to the 66-year-old system when it reopens.

Disneyland Resort hasn’t publicly confirmed its plans or shared a reopening timeline for the Monorail system. The Tomorrowland entrance to Disneyland Park is presumably closed, as the Monorail is the only access to that entry point into the original Southern California vacation destination.

Disneyland Resort’s website tells guests to “check back” for “updates” on the refurbishment without specifying when the transportation system will return to service.

The closure eliminates a key transportation option for guests staying at nearby hotels or visiting the Downtown Disney District before entering Disneyland Park. Families must now walk to the main entrance or access the park through Disney California Adventure with Park Hopper tickets.
