A hazmat situation backstage at Disneyland Park sent five cast members to the hospital Tuesday afternoon and triggered a sweeping evacuation across a significant stretch of Tomorrowland.

The disruption unfolded on March 10, when Disney cast members began evacuating guests from Space Mountain, Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, and their surrounding queues. WDWNT reported the closures and shared a Facebook photo of cast members stationed outside Star Traders, physically blocking Disney Park guests from entering the gift shop.

Lines of Disneyland Resort employees were posted at entry points from Fantasyland, Main Street, U.S.A., and other sections of the theme park, cutting off access to the affected zone entirely.

At least one performance of the “Celebrate Happy Cavalcade” was cancelled as Disney cast members ushered guests out of the area through backstage routes. The Space Mountain bathrooms closed, as did the top of Star Wars Launch Bay. Outdoor areas near Space Mountain, Star Tours, Alien Pizza Planet, and the Tomorrowland Theater were also blocked off.

Not everything in Tomorrowland shut down. Astro Orbiter, Autopia, Finding Nemo’s Submarine Voyage, the Galactic Grill, and the Little Green Men Store Command all remained operational throughout the incident.

Scanner monitoring account @OC_Scanner was among the first to flag the severity of what was unfolding behind the scenes, reporting that at least two people had been taken to the hospital and that the Anaheim Fire Department had mounted a significant response:

Theme park journalist Scott Gustin then shared an official update directly from Disneyland Resort, putting a clearer picture around what happened:

Building materials used by a contractor triggered a reaction backstage at Disneyland. Several cast members were treated on site by paramedics and released, while 5 experiencing dizziness and shortness of breath were taken to local hospitals.

Gustin followed up with confirmation from both Disneyland Resort officials and the Anaheim Fire Department on the scope of the incident:

According to Disneyland officials, nearby onstage areas were cleared of guests and should reopen soon. According to Anaheim Fire officials, the incident happened backstage near Star Tours. Fire officials also confirmed the situation did not impact any guests in the park.

No guests were harmed. The closed areas of Tomorrowland were expected to reopen following the response. However, Space Mountain and Star Tours – The Adventures Continue were still showing no wait times listed on the Disneyland Resort app at the time this article was published.
