Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind could soon receive some important maintenance work at EPCOT.
Disney World has filed a new construction permit for the popular roller coaster, and while permits are common across the resort, the contractor attached to this particular project has caught our attention.
Disney has hired Coastal Steel for the work.
Does that mean Cosmic Rewind is closing? Not necessarily. In fact, Disney hasn’t announced any closure at all.
But depending on what the contractor needs to do, some downtime remains a possibility.
New Construction Is Planned at Cosmic Rewind
The newly filed permit comes from Disney’s Facility Asset Management team and lists “General Construction” as the description of the project.
That broad language leaves plenty of unanswered questions.
Disney does not explain exactly where Coastal Steel will work or what part of the attraction requires attention. The contractor has experience with roller coasters and themed elements, making its involvement notable for an attraction as complex as Cosmic Rewind.
The coaster has been carrying guests through EPCOT since May 2022. Its enormous indoor ride system and elaborate themed environment mean there are plenty of components Disney must maintain behind the scenes.
Four years after opening, maintenance work itself shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
The bigger question is whether guests will notice it.
A Closure Isn’t Confirmed
Disney has not announced plans to close Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.
That’s an important distinction because a construction permit by itself does not mean an attraction is preparing for a refurbishment.
Disney frequently completes maintenance overnight and behind the scenes without affecting regular park operations. Depending on where Coastal Steel needs to work, the company could potentially do the same thing here.
If the project involves an area that cannot safely be accessed while trains are running, however, Disney could eventually need to schedule downtime.
The permit simply doesn’t provide enough information to know which scenario is more likely.
What Happens Next?
For now, guests planning to visit EPCOT can continue treating Cosmic Rewind as an operating attraction.
There is no announced closing date and no reopening date because Disney hasn’t confirmed a refurbishment.
The permit is still notable because of the type of contractor involved. Coastal Steel’s experience with coaster and themed construction makes this worth following more closely than some of the routine permits Disney files around its property.
If a closure is eventually required, Disney could add refurbishment dates to its schedule once the work gets closer.
It’s equally possible guests will never see any disruption.
Until Disney provides more information, Cosmic Rewind’s immediate future remains unchanged. The coaster is still operating, but there is now confirmed construction work planned at the attraction—and whether that work can happen without interrupting EPCOT operations is the big question.
