America Hits the Road: Record-Breaking Memorial Day Travel Forecast Puts Disney World in the Spotlight

45 Million People Will Be Traveling This One Weekend

It’s the kind of number that turns heads, especially for Disney World travel. 45.1 million Americans are packing bags, gassing up cars, and heading out for Memorial Day weekend this year—more than ever before in U.S. history, according to AAA.

That kind of movement doesn’t just make headlines—it reshapes travel trends, impacts local economies, and could make or break your weekend escape. But what’s driving this unprecedented surge? And why is Orlando, Florida at the very heart of it all?

The #1 Domestic Travel Destination This Memorial Day: Orlando, Florida AKA Disney World

In AAA’s latest travel outlook, Orlando ranked as the most popular domestic destination for the long weekend, topping cities like Las Vegas, New York, and Honolulu. Known for its iconic theme parks, Orlando is home to Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando, and a growing number of entertainment venues and resorts.

But this year, the spotlight is extra bright. With summer around the corner and theme park events ramping up, travelers are once again flocking to Central Florida for a dose of magic—and a long overdue break.

Why the Surge? A Closer Look at 2025’s Travel Trends

AAA’s data shows a 4% jump in total travelers compared to last year, with nearly 39 million hitting the road, up significantly as gas prices tick downward.

While 8% of travelers will opt to fly, the vast majority are choosing road trips—bringing back the classic American getaway. “We’re seeing strong demand across all transportation types,” said AAA Travel VP Stacey Barber. “But this year, families are embracing the road trip again. Many are choosing nearby getaways over cross-country flights.”

In short, Americans are traveling smarter—without sacrificing their travel goals. And Orlando checks a lot of boxes: warm weather, family-friendly attractions, and relatively affordable accommodations for those booking early.

What Travelers Should Expect in Orlando

With Orlando holding the top spot, guests should anticipate higher-than-normal crowd levels at airports, hotels, and especially within the theme parks.

For those headed to Walt Disney World, expect longer lines, busier transportation hubs, and limited last-minute availability for dining and resort bookings. Advance reservations, mobile ordering, and early park entry options will be key to navigating the crowds.

Even outside of the parks, the city is preparing for the boom. Orlando International Airport is expected to see some of its busiest days of the year. Local hotels are nearing capacity, and tourist corridors like International Drive will be bustling.

Beyond Orlando: The Bigger Picture of Post-Pandemic Travel

Since 2020, U.S. travel has staged a steady recovery—but 2025 may mark a full return to pre-pandemic levels. This year’s Memorial Day numbers suggest Americans are more eager than ever to reconnect with travel traditions.

Interestingly, AAA also revealed the top international destination for the weekend: Rome, Italy. With the recent election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, Catholic travelers are flocking to the Eternal City in a historic cultural moment.

Still, for most Americans, the road leads somewhere closer—and for millions, that road ends in the Sunshine State.

What It Means for the Rest of the Summer and Disney World Travel

This Memorial Day rush isn’t likely to be an isolated event. Travel analysts expect that summer 2025 will continue breaking records, especially at domestic destinations with family appeal. That’s good news for Orlando—and a wake-up call for last-minute travelers. Prices are expected to rise heading into June and July, and availability for major attractions like Disney and Universal will shrink quickly.

If Memorial Day is any indication, the great American vacation is back in full force, and the time to plan is now. Memorial Day has always been more than just a three-day weekend. It’s a signal that summer is here—a time to pause, reflect, and make memories. In 2025, it’s also a clear sign that Americans are on the move like never before.

Whether you’re road-tripping to the coast, flying across the country, or chasing magic in Orlando, this year’s record-breaking numbers prove one thing: the travel spirit is alive and well. So—have you packed your bags yet?

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
