Florida Faces Rare Arctic Blast, Bringing Record Lows to Disney World

An arctic blast swept across the state, sending temperatures plummeting to historic lows and even dusting some areas with snow—a rare sight for the Sunshine State.

Governor Ron DeSantis issued a State of Emergency, ensuring resources were in place to protect the community during the extreme cold. The sudden temperature drop disrupted daily life and impacted Florida’s tourism industry, including Walt Disney World, which had to adjust operations to prioritize safety.

Now, as Florida warms up again, Disney World is back in action, including the reopening of one of its most unique attractions.

Blizzard Beach Welcomes Guests After Prolonged Closure

Today, Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park has officially reopened after an extended closure caused by Central Florida’s unusual cold snap.

The water park initially closed its doors on January 20 due to cold, wet conditions that made it impractical for guests to enjoy outdoor water attractions. The closure was meant to be temporary, but as the cold persisted, reopening dates were repeatedly postponed.

Blizzard Beach, themed around a whimsical melting ski resort, is typically a haven for guests seeking to escape the Florida heat. During the recent weather event, however, its frosty decor mirrored the real-world chill, keeping visitors away.

  1. Stay Informed: Operating hours can still be affected by unexpected weather. Check Disney World’s official website or app for real-time updates.
  2. Pack Smart: While daytime temperatures are returning to normal, early mornings and evenings can remain brisk. Bring a jacket or an extra towel to stay comfortable.
  3. Arrive Early: After days of closure, Blizzard Beach may attract higher-than-usual crowds. Early arrivals can help maximize your experience.

Walt Disney World Resort’s Response to the Cold Weather

Disney World’s response to the rare arctic blast showcased its preparedness and dedication to guest safety. While Blizzard Beach and other outdoor attractions were temporarily closed, the resort pivoted to indoor experiences. Parks such as Magic Kingdom and EPCOT offered warm havens with indoor rides, character meet-and-greets, and live shows.

Resorts added special indoor activities and dining experiences to keep the magic alive for guests staying on property. These adjustments ensured that visitors could still enjoy Disney World’s signature magic, even amid unusually cold conditions. The reopening of Blizzard Beach is a promising sign that Florida is returning to its usual balmy weather.

For Disney World guests, it means the full range of attractions, including water parks, are once again available to enjoy. With seasonal events and activities in full swing across Disney World’s parks, there’s no better time to plan a visit. Whether you’re a fan of Blizzard Beach’s Summit Plummet or prefer strolling through EPCOT’s festivals, Disney offers something for everyone.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
