We are not here to be dramatic about a water park closing for its annual refurbishment. That is a normal Disney World thing that happens every year.
What we are here to talk about is that this particular closure marks the end of something that has been genuinely rare for the past several years, and if you have a Walt Disney World trip with any dates before September 8, you have a window that is closing faster than most guests realize.
Here is the situation. Typhoon Lagoon’s final operating day this year is September 8, 2026. On September 9, it closes for its annual refurbishment and will not return until sometime in 2027. Blizzard Beach stays open. The free water park hotel perk that has been running all summer for eligible Disney Resorts Collection hotel guests also expires on September 8.
That combination of both parks being open at the same time plus a free admission benefit for hotel guests? That is done after September 8. Both of those things are coming back in summer 2027, per Disney’s own confirmation, but that does not help you if your trip is in October.
Why Having Both Parks This Summer Has Actually Mattered
We want to make a case here because this deserves more than a passing mention.
After the pandemic, Disney World water parks settled into an alternating schedule where one was open while the other sat closed for maintenance. Guests got used to having one option at a time. Then in 2025, Disney brought both Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach back simultaneously for the first time since 2019, and 2026 continued that. This summer is only the second time since before the pandemic that guests have had a real choice between two genuinely different water park experiences in the same trip.
And they are genuinely different. That is not marketing language. Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach are not the same park with different paint jobs.
Typhoon Lagoon is the one built around a tropical storm narrative. The wave pool is the centrepiece and it is legitimately impressive, the kind of surf pool that generates real waves and makes guests from landlocked states do a double take. The theming commits to its storm-tossed fishing village concept throughout, which gives the park an atmosphere that holds up even after multiple visits.
Blizzard Beach is operating on a completely different kind of Disney brain. A ski resort in Florida that melted into a water park is an extremely specific idea and the park executes it fully. Summit Plummet, one of the fastest and tallest free-fall slides anywhere in the world, is the signature experience. The overall energy is sillier, more chaotic, and more uniquely Disney in a way that Typhoon Lagoon is not. Guests who want a big thrill and a Disney-specific concept go to Blizzard Beach. Guests who want a great wave pool and a more grounded beachy atmosphere go to Typhoon Lagoon.
Having both available in the same summer is not a minor detail. It is the difference between a choice and a default.
The Hotel Perk That Expires Alongside the Park
One of the better Disney World value plays this summer has been the free water park admission tied to hotel check-in through Cool Kids Summer. Guests staying at eligible Disney Resorts Collection hotels with arrivals between May 26 and September 8, 2026 have received complimentary water park admission on their check-in day as part of their resort stay.
We have said before and will say again that this perk changes what arrival day feels like. Getting to a Disney World resort after a long travel morning and spending the afternoon in a wave pool instead of a theme park is a fundamentally different kind of vacation start. Lower pressure. No Lightning Lane decisions. No dining reservation to race to. Just a family getting acclimated to being on vacation before the theme parks begin.
With both Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach available this summer, that first-day choice carried real weight. Did you want waves or did you want Summit Plummet? Both were right there.
September 8 is the last day both of those things are true simultaneously.
What the Disney World Water Park Situation Looks Like From September Onward
From September 9, Blizzard Beach runs solo. Typhoon Lagoon is in refurbishment for several months, with a return expected in 2027 ahead of another summer where Disney has confirmed both parks will open simultaneously along with the return of the hotel check-in water park perk.
Guests visiting Walt Disney World in fall or winter 2026 have one water park option. Blizzard Beach is a strong standalone experience and Summit Plummet alone justifies a visit for guests who have never done it. But the wave pool, the tropical theming, and everything Typhoon Lagoon specifically offers are on hold until next year.
The free check-in perk also does not carry over. Guests with arrivals on or after September 9 are not eligible for the summer benefit. Blizzard Beach is available separately ticketed, but the complimentary first-day access is gone until 2027.
Typhoon Lagoon has been part of Walt Disney World since 1989, opening as the resort’s second water park after the long-gone River Country. It has closed and returned through multiple refurbishment cycles. It will do the same here. But the version of this summer where both parks were running and hotel guests got in free on arrival day was a specific and fleeting thing, and September 8 is where it ends.
